Aiken County Resolves Election Glitch: All Votes Counted and Certified

Aiken County’s Election Roller Coaster: What Happened?

Aiken County, known for its beautiful parks and charming neighborhoods, recently found itself at the center of an election drama that had folks holding their breath. Despite a bit of a rocky start, all the votes cast during this past election have been accurately counted and certified, according to confirmations from both state and county election officials.

The Initial Blunder

So, here’s the scoop: there was a little mix-up with the election results. A minor software glitch turned what should be a straightforward counting process into a headache. John Michael Catalano, a spokesperson for the South Carolina Election Commission, explained that some vote totals in Aiken County ended up being incorrectly assigned to the wrong voting-method category. For instance, absentee votes were showing up in the election day totals. “It was the makeup of the vote,” Catalano clarified.

A Misunderstanding of the Audit

In the world of elections, audits are incredibly important. They ensure that every vote counts and that there are no funny business going on during the counting process. Catalano went on to explain that no other county in South Carolina has failed an audit since the state updated its voting process with paper ballots in 2020. “It wasn’t really a failed audit,” he stated. “It just highlighted issues that needed to be resolved before certification.”

Recounting the Votes

Enter Dana Burden, Aiken County’s registration and elections director, who had a similar story to tell. Initially, Burden confirmed that Aiken County had indeed failed its audit. But fear not! As of Tuesday afternoon, they managed to recertify the votes and passed that audit after all. The saga began last Friday when Burden was notified that the counts weren’t tallying up during their hand audit following the statewide elections. It turns out that the issues were much more manageable than initially thought — just a pesky software glitch!

What Went Wrong?

Here’s how it all played out: when inputting the election data into their systems via a thumb drive, some absentee ballots mistakenly ended up under the election day totals. Burden noted that the total counts were off by at least six or seven votes after they started double-checking everything. “It was really not a big deal,” she remarked, assuring everyone that the actual results remained unchanged.

Why It Matters

Burden emphasized that the purpose of an audit is to guarantee that every vote is counted accurately. “I’d much rather do a recount — like I did this weekend — just to confirm everything was right than to simply hope for the best,” she explained. The dedication to accuracy is evident in her words. “We don’t hope it’s right. We make sure it’s right.”

The Final Steps

After completing the recertification on Tuesday, Aiken County sent the finalized results to the state election commission. In turn, the state sealed the deal on Thursday morning, tying a neat bow around the electoral process. All in all, it’s a good reminder of how important our election systems are, and how even in the face of minor hiccups, officials are dedicated to getting things straightened out.

So, Aiken County residents can breathe easy knowing their voices were heard and counted accurately! If there’s one thing this election cycle showed us, it’s that even when things get shaky, hard work and diligence can get everything back on track.
