With the beautiful sunshine and near-record high temperatures making for some perfect fall days, Aiken County, South Carolina, is bustling with voters as early voting continues. With temperatures reaching a high of 88°F, it’s hard to believe we’re already well into the fall season! The weather has certainly encouraged many to step out and participate in the democratic process.
However, amidst this wave of civic engagement, some voters are raising concerns about faulty ballot machines. In recent days, reports have surfaced from voters experiencing issues with straight-ticket voting — specifically, they’ve claimed that when voting for one party, their ballot mysteriously flipped to the other party’s candidate.
To get to the bottom of things and ease any worries, we visited the Aiken County elections office. Aiken County Elections Director, Dana Burden, assured us that these machines have been thoroughly tested and that such a malfunction is not possible. “We’ve tested and retested these machines to ensure the accuracy,” Burden said. She explained that any discrepancies occur not due to machine faults but rather the result of human error during the voting process.
Burden elaborated, “If someone selects a straight ticket and then touches the screen again to mark another choice, that action can inadvertently unmark their previous selection.” The good news is that election officials have made it easy for voters to double-check their choices. “That’s why we have a paper trail,” Burden noted. “Always make sure to review your printed ballot before submitting it into the scanner.”
We decided to chat with some voters who were in line and casting their votes. Thankfully, most reported smooth sailing with no problems whatsoever! Eric Gleaton, who has been voting for years, shared, “I’ve never had issues when I came to vote. I’m 54, and I’ve been doing this since I was 18.”
Chris Fulmer chimed in, “I didn’t have any issues, none whatsoever, went perfectly fine,” while another voter, Christy Springer, summarized her experience with a simple, “No ma’am in there and out.”
Other voters echoed this sentiment as well, including Chris Coleman, who mentioned, “The voting process was very simple, straightforward, in and out. The machines were working without a hitch.” Lisa Williams shared her delight at the experience, calling the atmosphere “really quiet” and noting that “everybody had smiles on their face and people were talking in line, and that’s what I want to see.”
For anyone who might experience issues, Burden reminded voters that poll workers are there to help. “If you see that your printed ballot is incorrect, take it to a poll worker immediately. They are trained to handle any problems,” she urged. With teamwork and some clear communication, Aiken’s voting experience is meant to be as seamless as possible.
As we enjoy this delightful weather and participate in our beloved democratic process, remember to stay informed and double-check your selections. With beautiful days ahead, it’s a great time to make your voice heard!
