Augusta, Georgia is buzzing with excitement as early voting for the 2024 Presidential and Local Elections is officially underway! With just two weeks to go until the General Election, many locals are seizing the chance to cast their ballots early, making the process a little more convenient for everyone.
On a sunny Saturday, residents flocked to polling locations, sharing their thoughts on this year’s election and the benefits of early voting. Carla Mercer, a longtime Augusta resident, decided to switch things up this year. “I’ve always waited until election day,” she said. “But, I said today if they were going to be open on Saturday. When I found out, I said I’m going to do it today and I’m glad I did it.”
Four locations around Augusta-Richmond County are open for early voting, ensuring accessibility for voters. Through next week, these polling spots will welcome people from Monday, October 21, to Saturday, October 26, between 8:30 AM and 6:00 PM.
For many residents, the ability to cast their vote on a Saturday is a game-changer. Debra Riles Williams, another Augusta local, highlighted the importance of weekend voting. “Having the opportunity to vote on Saturday opens it up for people who do work Monday through Friday, like myself,” she explained. “It’s important to our community that we have a place like this that’s open on Saturdays, that’s in our neighborhoods. And it shows our young people that regardless of school or jobs, you can still come and vote.”
The excitement isn’t just about the presidential race; there’s a buzz around local candidates and issues as well. Christopher Mulliens, running for School Board District 5, remarked on the importance of down-ballot voting. “We have a lot riding locally,” he noted. “I think people have to understand that we have to start voting all the way down the ballot to make sure that we are impacted how we need to be impacted.”
This sentiment resonates deeply with many voters, including Carla Mercer, who believes in the power of individual votes to bring about change. “If you want change, you have to be about the change. Be about the change and so I’m really excited about doing it today,” she stated with enthusiasm.
As the countdown to the election continues, it’s clear that early voting presents an excellent opportunity for community members to participate in the democratic process. The convenience of extra voting days allows more people to engage in the crucial decisions that affect their lives directly.
As we look ahead to the end of October, Augusta residents remain committed to exercising their right to vote, motivated by the realization that their choices matter. Whether it’s a presidential candidate or local issues at stake, every vote counts. So, let’s keep heading to the polls, Augusta!
Remember, early voting is an opportunity that makes it easier to have your voice heard. Be sure to mark your calendars and take advantage of this chance to make a difference in your community!
