Augusta is buzzing with energy after a summer filled with tech-savvy excitement! This past season, the Alliance for Fort Eisenhower hosted its largest CyberPatriot summer camp yet, welcoming nearly 220 campers aged between 10 and 17. This amazing turnout showcases not only the growing interest in cybersecurity but also the incredible support our community provides for young learners.
The CyberPatriot program is a fantastic initiative designed to promote STEM education among school-aged children. With a focus on strengthening their skills in cybersecurity, the program prepares participants for future careers in a vital field. This year, more than 66% of the campers had immediate family members serving in the military, highlighting the program’s deep connection to the community. Not to forget, around 40% of attendees were young women, inspiring a new generation of female tech enthusiasts!
Making this event possible were two dedicated interns, Alex Miles and Thomas Clark. Sponsored by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), they recently wrapped up a six-week internship with the Alliance. Their roles were pivotal in the planning and execution of this year’s camp. “Our interns did a phenomenal job working on the CyberPatriot summer camp planning committee,” said Tom Clark, executive director of CSRA Alliance for Fort Eisenhower. They also helped distribute 100 computers, graciously provided by an AT&T grant, to military spouses stationed on Fort Eisenhower, ensuring technological access for those who support our troops.
The Student2Work program, now in its seventh year, is a wonderful community initiative aimed at giving local high school juniors and seniors valuable on-the-job experiences. Thanks to organizations like SRNS and the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce, students can secure meaningful paid internships at nonprofit organizations, helping them build confidence and skills for their future careers. “We are extremely grateful for the community support that allows these students to gain confidence and mentorship for their future career,” expressed Augusta Chamber president and CEO Sue Parr.
Since the inception of the summer camp in 2019, the Alliance for Fort Eisenhower has successfully graduated over 750 young people from various cybersecurity programs. Their commitment to nurturing young talent ensures that future generations are well-equipped to face the challenges of the digital world. With increasing attendance and enthusiastic participation, the camp continues to evolve, making a lasting impact on the lives of participants.
As summer winds down, Augusta residents can look forward to a variety of other exciting events. For instance, the Aiken Standard’s Home and Garden Show is returning for its 13th year this September. Attendees will have the chance to explore amazing landscaping, interior design, and home remodeling exhibits. Additionally, community efforts are underway to continue beloved local festivities, such as the Hoofbeats and Christmas Carols Parade, amid some recent rumors about its demise.
We also had a heartwarming celebration in September as Nadria Gary, affectionately known as Lammy Lamb, organized a Pink Out Day to mark one year of being cancer-free. This event also kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month, emphasizing the strength and resilience within our community.
As we embrace the next season, it’s clear that Augusta is a vibrant hub of learning, support, and celebration. The CyberPatriot summer camp is just one example of how our community invests in its youth, preparing them for futures filled with potential. Together, with the support of local organizations and passionate individuals, we are shaping a brighter tomorrow for all.
