In a heartwarming act of community service and dedicated work, Compass for Hope celebrated its 3rd birthday and the achievement of providing their 900th free shower service to the homeless community. The non-profit organization gathered, as they traditionally do every Sunday, in the James Brown Arena parking lot to deliver essential services to those in need.
Compass for Hope, a charitable organization based in Augusta, Georgia, has been diligently working to empower the homeless community with acts of kindness. Beyond just complimentary showers, the group also offers free food, clothing, haircuts, and essential toiletries. According to Mike Garrison, the Executive Director of Compass for Hope, the objective is quite clear, it’s all about, “building confidence one shower and one spin cycle at a time.”
Garrison believes that the problem of homelessness is intricate and requires complex yet compassionate solutions. Compass for Hope started with the aim to play its part in resolving this pressing issue. He said, “Homelessness is a really complex problem, and I think it’s going to be a really complex solution“. Enthusiastically, he added that the organization has so far managed to get four people off the streets. He emphasized, “That’s four people who aren’t going to sleep on the streets anymore, and we had a chance to be a part of that.“
The organization has managed to transition from a small idea into a large impactful entity, thanks to its dedicated volunteers and the power of social media. Recalling their journey, Garrison highlighted their accomplishments: “I never really imagined that we would be able to afford a shower trailer, and now we own two of them. Then, we turned around and built that laundry trailer. “. He fondly referred to it as a divine intervention whereby things fall into place when they are meant to.
Volunteers are crucial cogs in the wheel for Compass for Hope’s work. They enjoy being actively involved in making a positive impact within their community. Along with regular services, the organization also provides bicycles to those in need, aiding their transportation facilities.
If you are excited about contributing towards community building like Compass for Hope, the organization is constantly welcoming volunteers or donations to help them provide these essential services. It’s an opportunity to make a difference in someone else’s life and creating a more empathetic society for all.
