Yolonda Jefferson, a kind-hearted resident known for her spirit of generosity, opened her doors to her family amidst the chaos of the hurricane.

“It was just one big sleepover,” Yolonda cheerfully remarked as she reminisced about the few days her home transformed into a bustling haven. When faced with the storm, she reached out to her family and welcomed them into her cozy abode. To say it was an eventful gathering would be an understatement. With 18 family members—comprised of adults and children alike—nestled tightly in her three-bedroom, two-bathroom residence, it became a true test of love and resilience.

A Closer Look at the Sleeping Arrangements

Picture this: the first three days without power, and yet spirits remained high. In one of the bedrooms, equipped with wooden bunk beds, Yolonda ingeniously added one mattress and two air mattresses on the floor, accommodating five people comfortably. The second bedroom, more like a cozy nook or a smaller office space, was home to a futon that served one family member. Meanwhile, Yolonda and her wife Georgia took charge of the primary bedroom. The living room? That became a makeshift sleeping area where creativity soared. “One is on the couch, then we just pushed the couch back against the wall to open up floor space, and we fit about eight air mattresses here,” Yolonda said, adding, “Then two more on the recliners.”

Feeding the Crew

With so many mouths to feed, mealtime was no small feat! Yet Yolonda made it seem easy as everyone pitched in to help. The adults took turns procuring food from stores or outreach services while Yolonda and Georgia donned their chef hats. “Thankfully, we had a deep freezer… so the meat was able to stay cold longer,” she shared with relief. “We basically had a cookout every day.”

From shrimp kabobs to good old hot dogs, meals turned into joyful gatherings of laughter and bonding over delicious food. Often menacing, the storm provided a unique opportunity for connection, and the family took full advantage of it. Grilling became the name of the game, and side dishes like corn on the cob brought even more delight to the table.

A Lifetime of Hospitality

Though hosting a crowd during a natural disaster is no easy task, families like Yolonda’s thrived in the chaos. From Augusta, she shared her upbringing where large gatherings were the norm. “We were raised in a 15-person household,” she recalled, her eyes glinting with nostalgia. “I have never had my house alone with just me and my kids.”

In fact, even before Hurricane Helene, her home buzzed with energy, often housing about nine family members, including children and grandchildren. Beyond family obligations, Yolonda extends her kindness to others by keeping a watchful eye on her grandmother and aunt, ensuring they are well taken care of.

A Heart for Helping Others

But her caring nature doesn’t end there. For over 20 years, Yolonda has opened her home to at-risk girls, guiding them towards obtaining their GEDs, finding jobs, and gaining access to affordable childcare. Her passion for giving back and her natural ability to support and empower those around her is commendable.

As Hurricane Helene dissipates, Yolonda remains focused on helping others. She actively seeks donations to assist her community, particularly at the Maxwell and Peabody Apartments in Augusta. Yolonda’s indomitable spirit in times of distress exemplifies what it means to come together as a community. “It’s all about looking after each other,” she says, as her warmth continues to radiate even amidst the storm’s aftermath.
