Aiken, South Carolina, is mourning the loss of a beloved community member, Michael Clinton Whittle, who peacefully entered into rest on September 18, 2024. Mike, as he was affectionately known, was 67 years old and was a person whose presence touched many lives in the area.
Mike was a proud graduate of Aiken High School, finishing his studies in 1975. Following his education, he dedicated years of his life to working as a Mechanical Engineer at the Savannah River Site, where he contributed his skills and expertise until his retirement. His career was marked by hard work and dedication, reflecting his commitment to both his profession and his community.
Outside of work, Mike had a profound love for nature. He spent countless hours working in his yard, cultivating the beauty of his surroundings. Many knew him as a familiar figure in the Hitchcock Woods, where he enjoyed peaceful walks amidst the serene backdrop of nature. Cutting wood and tending to his outdoor tasks brought him joy and fulfillment, allowing him to connect with the natural world.
Mike was not just an avid gardener and engineer; he was also a deeply spiritual man. He was a faithful attendee of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where he found community and purpose. His generous nature and eagerness to help others were attributes that defined him, leading to his involvement in numerous charitable initiatives and acts of kindness. His family and friends remember him as someone who was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer support to those in need.
Mike is survived by his loving parents, George E. and Bessie L. Whittle, who have been a pillar of support throughout his life. He also leaves behind two sisters, Terri Whittle Doman (Daryl) and Kim Whittle Owings, whom he cherished deeply. His family continued with Benjamin E. Owings (Aleirrys), his nephew, and niece Abigail R. Owings, both of whom brought immense joy to his life.
The community is invited to pay their respects during a visitation at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Saturday, September 21, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. This will be followed by a service at 11:00 AM, where friends and family will gather to celebrate Mike’s life and legacy. After the service, interment will take place at Central Baptist Church, located at 1652 Wire Road in Aiken. Special family members and friends will serve as pallbearers—a testament to the love and respect they held for Mike.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in memory of Mike C. Whittle to the Ebenezer Baptist Church at PO Box 7, Trenton, SC 29847. This gesture reflects Mike’s own spirit of giving and his commitment to his faith community.
As the town of Aiken reflects on the life of Michael Clinton Whittle, it is evident that he will be greatly missed. His contributions to the community, his love for family, and his spirit of kindness will continue to resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. Friends and family are encouraged to share their memories and photos, keeping Mike’s spirit alive in the hearts of those he touched.
