Aiken, SC – On August 11, St. John’s Methodist Church played host to a spirited event known as “Tailgates and Touchdowns,” bringing together the community, church members, and sports enthusiasts in a delightful afternoon filled with activities and fellowship. The event welcomed several high-profile mascots including Hairy Dawg from the University of Georgia, Cocky from the University of South Carolina, and Tiger from Clemson University, all of whom were met with enthusiastic cheers and excitement.
Inside the church’s gymnasium, tables were lined with information about various ministries and activities offered by the church. Attendees could learn about Sunday school, children’s ministry, pickleball groups, and even wheelchair ramp-building programs. The gym was abuzz with energy as volunteers offered frozen treats, cookies, hot dogs, and other tempting snacks to guests of all ages.
The Rev. Will Altman, the church’s associate pastor of missions, evangelism, and young adults, explained the motivation behind the event: “We wanted to get the church together and share all the wonderful ministries happening here.” He mentioned various groups available for participation, including men’s and women’s fellowships, music programs, a hospitality group, and a prayer shawl ministry.
Steve Lathrop, representing the Jack Meeks Memorial Wheelchair Ramp Ministry along with the Stephen Ministry and Methodist Men, highlighted the importance of community involvement. “This is the second year we’ve done it,” he shared. “Our goal is to give everyone something meaningful to participate in as we head into September.” Many attendees expressed interest in the various activities, filling the room with a sense of belonging and purpose.
Participants were encouraged to wear their college colors, leading to a colorful display of team spirit. Many schools were represented, including Coastal Carolina, Florida State, Tennessee, and others, creating a lively atmosphere as everyone showcased their fandom.
The event this year had an extra special touch with the appearance of Hairy Dawg, who traveled a considerable distance to be part of the festivities. Reyna Alexander, representing the University of Georgia, said, “A two-hour drive is absolutely nothing for us. Hairy is always eager to cover ground and connect with fans.” She mentioned it was a busy weekend for Hairy Dawg, who participated in several events prior to the church gathering.
Susan McDonald, the church’s hospitality coordinator, shared a heartwarming story from the event. “A lady and her son walked in, and she shared that she had been searching for a place to worship. She saw our parking lot full and decided to check it out,” McDonald recounted. She was pleased to connect the son with the church’s youth group, emphasizing the welcoming, loving environment they strive to create.
“When she left, she said, ‘Yes, you’re playing Christian music and everybody’s loving on each other, so this was a worship experience for me,’” McDonald added, highlighting the essence of community and connection that the church aims to foster.
The “Tailgates and Touchdowns” event at St. John’s Methodist Church was not just a celebration of college sports but a heartening display of community spirit and church ministry. With food, fellowship, and the joy of togetherness, attendees left with a deeper appreciation for their church community and the numerous ways to engage in meaningful ministry.
