Hey there, Aiken! It’s that time when we take a moment to celebrate our local leaders who work tirelessly for our community. The recent election has brought back some familiar faces to represent us in the South Carolina Senate, and boy, do we have some news to share!
On November 5, Senator Tom Young Jr., along with Senate Majority Leader Shane Massey and Senate Minority Leader Brad Hutto, all secured their spots for another term. Let’s break it down a bit and talk about what happened.
First up, we have the Republican senator, Tom Young Jr., who has been rocking Senate District 24 since 2013. He faced off against Democrat Dee Elder and clinched the win with a hefty 31,123 votes, which counts for a remarkable 67.61% of the total. Elder managed to garner 14,886 votes, approximately 32.34%. Young expressed his gratitude to his supporters and emphasized his ongoing commitment to improve Aiken County and our beloved state.
Next, we swing over to Shane Massey, also a Republican, who didn’t have to battle any opponents for District 25. Talk about a confidence boost! Massey has been representing our area since 2007, covering not just Aiken’s Midland Valley but also parts of Edgefield, McCormick, Saluda, and Lexington counties. Looks like folks really trust him to keep things running smoothly!
Our third spotlight shines on Brad Hutto, who flew the Democratic flag high as he defended his seat in District 40. Hutto faced off against Republican Sharon Carter, and it was a close race with Hutto snagging 24,275 votes, or 52.8%, compared to Carter’s 21,660 votes at 47.11%. Hutto has been in the Senate since 1996, making him quite the seasoned pro at this whole legislating thing!
It’s worth noting that after the results of the 2020 Census, Hutto’s District 40 got a little makeover. The Wagener-Salley-Perry area shifted in from District 26, bringing a few more constituents into the mix. This district also stretches to include Barnwell, Allendale, Bamberg counties, and parts of Orangeburg and Colleton counties. A real diverse area, wouldn’t you say?
The newly reelected trio is excited to keep working for our community. As they aim to tackle issues ranging from education to infrastructure, it’s clear that they have the best interests of Aiken County at heart.
So, here’s a big shoutout to our senators! Thank you for your service, and we look forward to seeing how you continue to make Aiken County an even better place to live, work, and grow. Until next time, stay tuned for more updates and remember to support your local journalism—we’re in this together!
