Ah, Greenville! It’s that time of year again when the air is buzzing with the smell of pine, the twinkling lights adorn homes, and the chill in the air makes us all a little more nostalgic. As we plunge headfirst into the holiday season, it’s easy to get caught up in the festive frenzy. But this year, for one local resident, the Christmas spirit has taken on a whole new meaning—one filled with travel, family, and a sprinkle of chaos.
It all starts on November 1, right on the heels of a birthday celebration. Our holiday traveler, let’s call her “Phyllis,” has spent more time on the go than cozying up in her own bed. From a long-awaited 11-day adventure in Portugal with her husband, Tom, and friend, Susan, to brief pit stops in Greenville, the joy of traveling has been somewhat of a double-edged sword for her this year. “I’ve been away from my comfy bed for about 22 days already!” she shares. “And while I love my adventures, I really just want to curl up in my own sheets for a week.”
As December rolled in, Phyllis found herself in a bit of a holiday pickle. Usually, she decorates her home with great enthusiasm, ready for the festive onslaught by the time Advent arrives. But this year? Not so much. “My husband got our Christmas tree down from the attic, but the pre-lit lights have decided to go on strike,” she laments. It’s one of those classic dilemmas—what should be easy has turned into a source of irritation. Who knew that a two-year-old tree could have so many dark spots?
And let’s not forget about that elusive Christmas shower curtain! “I was sure I had it put away in a safe spot,” she sighs, “but just like holiday cookies that never seem to get made, I can’t find it anywhere.”
Despite the hiccups with decoration, the spirit of the season has definitely pushed its way into Phyllis’s busy calendar. She received a text from her daughter, Cat, about the much-loved North Augusta Christmas Tour of Homes, which they’ve enjoyed together for years. The unofficial countdown to Christmas may have slipped into the chaos, but moments like these bring back that festive cheer.
This year, however, her schedule is packed tighter than a Christmas stocking! There’s a special showcase for her grandson Cade’s girlfriend at the Governor’s School that requires another weekend away from home, throwing a slight wrench into her holiday plans.
Every Christmas, the sweet scents of cinnamon and evergreen are often overshadowed by another age-old problem: the gift list! Phyllis has a tradition with her daughters that never fails to cause a friendly family tussle. “Our husbands think one gift per person is all we need, while I’ve always believed in the joy of abundance.” And abundance she does, wrapping a staggering number of presents each year.
“I remember counting 17 presents for each child one year!” she exclaimed. “Now, I’ve cut back a bit, but I still love to spoil my family to remind them how much they mean to me.” What a refreshing approach in a time where minimalism is often all the rage!
As the dust settles from her holiday hustle and bustle, Phyllis takes a moment to reflect on the essence of Christmas. “I’m wishing everyone a peaceful, meaningful Christmas filled with love, laughter, and yes—even a bit of time spent in your own bed.”
So here’s to a cozy holiday season filled with fond memories, a sprinkle of travel, and that sweet thrill that comes with giving and receiving. Whether you’re nestled in your treasured home or off on a new adventure, may the spirit of Christmas shine brightly for you and your loved ones!
