Christmas Cheer Returns to Aiken with Exciting Events This Weekend

As the festive season takes hold, the charming city of Aiken, South Carolina, is ready to spread some holiday cheer with three exciting events that locals and visitors alike won’t want to miss! From twinkling lights to festive crafts and a joyous parade, Aiken is gearing up for a celebration that promises to make this Christmas one for the books.

Deck the Halls: Tree Lighting Ceremony

The festivities kick off on December 6 with the 36th annual downtown Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Taking place in the Newberry Street Festival Area between Park and Richland avenues, this enchanting event will run from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. What’s the star of the show, you ask? Why, it’s the stunning Christmas tree adorned with a dazzling 8,000 lights that will dance in sync to your favorite holiday tunes.

Before the tree lights up the night, make sure to check out the earlier lineup. At 4:00 PM, the city will officially kick things off with its opening Festival of Trees at the Center for African American History, Art & Culture, located at 120 York St. N.E.. Grab your family and friends — this festival runs from December 6 through January 4, providing plenty of opportunities to explore the holiday wonders.

The tree lighting ceremony will be filled with live entertainment from local choirs, delightful refreshments, and of course, a special visit from Aiken’s very own Mayor Teddy Milner and Santa Claus. Indulge in free hot chocolate and cider while you soak up the festive atmosphere. S’mores kits will also be available for those looking to add a sweet touch to their evening. The festivities are made possible thanks to generous sponsorship from Security Federal Bank, Cedar Creek Church, and USC Aiken. Admission is free, so round up the family and come join in the fun!

Get Crafty: 54th Annual Christmas Craft Show

But wait, the fun doesn’t stop there! On the same day from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the 54th annual Christmas Craft Show will take place at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, located at 1700 Whiskey Road. This event is a treasure trove for those who love unique finds. With exhibitors from all over the Southeast showcasing their handmade wares, you’re bound to discover the perfect gifts for everyone on your list.

And when it comes to satisfying your hunger, local food vendors will be on-site, eager to serve up delicious treats. Remember, admission to this event is also free! However, just a quick note: pets aren’t allowed inside the building, so make sure to plan ahead if you’re bringing your furry friends along.

Parades, Prizes, and More!

The festivities continue into the weekend with the much-anticipated Aiken Christmas Parade on December 8 at 2:00 PM. This year’s theme is “Holidays Around the World,” adding a globe-trotting twist to this beloved local tradition. Starting at the corner of Union Street and Park Avenue, the parade will wind its way through the city, offering a delightful spectacle for all.

Leading the parade will be none other than Will Williams, the president and CEO of the Western SC Economic Development Partnership, serving as grand marshal. Williams expressed his joy at the honor, sharing his love for Christmas and the importance of family festivities. His contributions to Aiken County’s development efforts are significant, adding more than $3.5 billion in investments and creating over 4,500 jobs. It’s a celebration of community spirit, and there’s no better way to honor that than through the holiday season.

So, whether you’re hunting for gifts, enjoying the twinkling lights, or cheering on the festive parade, Aiken is the place to be this weekend. Grab your loved ones, bundle up against the crisp December air, and dive into the joy of the season!
