BioLab Warehouse Fire Leads to Lifting of Shelter-in-place Order and Reopening of Interstate Highway 10 in Westlake, Louisiana

Shelter-in-place Order Lifted Following BioLab Warehouse Fire; Interstate Highway 10 Reopened

WESTLAKE, La. – After a significant industrial fire this morning, Louisiana State Police has confirmed that the precautionary shelter-in-place order around the BioLab facility located in Westlake has been lifted as of 11:20 a.m. The Interstate Highway 10 (I-10), which had been closed between the east and west junctions with Interstate 210 (I-10/210), has also been reopened.

Emergency Preparedness Office Continues Investigation

The Calcasieu Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness (OHSEP) is persistently investigating the warehouse fire that took place at the facility this morning. BiLab is located in an industrial area just south of I-10.

According to Jared Maze, Director of the OHSEP, investigations are still ongoing to determine if there was any fallout from the incident that could have affected the surrounding areas. Fortunately, no injuries have occurred as a result of the fire, which has now been completely put out.

Return to Normalcy Expected Soon

A spokesperson from BioLab has reported that the smoke, which was previously billowing from their facility, has now been completely contained. The company is optimistic about resuming its operations shortly. The spokesperson relayed appreciation for the first responders and local authorities for their timely efforts that helped in speedily bringing the fire under control. The spokesperson reiterated BioLab’s commitment, emphasizing that the safety of the community in Lake Charles remains their top priority.

Safe Chlorine Levels Reported

In a post-incident analysis, plant monitors have reported non-detect chlorine reading which indicates that the chlorine levels are within the before-considered safe limits. This report was further validated by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, alleviating concerns about potential chemical fallout.

Eventful Day on I-10

This has certainly been an eventful day for drivers on the I-10, starting with a warehouse fire and ending with a blocked path due to a disabled semi-truck. The situation caused traffic congestion, with video footage showing crews strenuously working to remove the wreck from the scene.
