Augusta was buzzing this past Sunday evening as more than 150 eager supporters filled the IBEW Local Union 1579 headquarters to see a familiar face—former President Bill Clinton! The room was alive with chatter and excitement, a sure sign that something special was about to happen.
On his national tour promoting Vice President Kamala Harris, Clinton brought his charisma and enthusiasm to the stage, diving into the importance of the upcoming election. He started off by sharing that he and his wife, Hillary, jumped at the chance to endorse Harris shortly after she declared her candidacy. “Hillary and I endorsed her within an hour of her becoming a candidate,” he remarked with a smile. This quick endorsement showed just how much they believe in Harris and her potential.
Clinton humorously reminisced about his eagerness to hit the road for this campaign, saying, “Send me to the country! Oh my goodness, that JD Vance, he gave us hillbillies a bad name.” His lighthearted banter immediately connected with the audience, creating a warm atmosphere filled with laughter.
In a speech that lasted around 20 minutes, Clinton didn’t shy away from comparing Harris to Donald Trump. He shared valuable insights from his own presidency, making it clear that he felt uniquely qualified to judge the current political landscape. “I’m actually a pretty good judge for this election because I had the job,” he said, adding that he knows both candidates personally.
Hillary has known Kamala for over 30 years, from their days as young lawyers. “Kamala is still younger, and Hillary (she never lets me forget) is younger than me,” Clinton joked. Their friendly ribbing showcased a camaraderie that made the evening feel even more relatable.
Despite clearly leaning toward Harris, Clinton also emphasized a message of unity. “There are things we have to do, but we can’t get there if we spend all our time fighting each other,” he urged. This call for togetherness resonated with many in attendance, reminding everyone of the importance of collaboration in politics.
“I am sick and tired of everybody going, ‘This is us and them’,” he declared, pointing out that constant division only hinders progress. His enthusiasm for bringing people together sparked hope among supporters.
Among the audience members was Diane Via, who shared her thoughts on the event. “I thought it was wonderful that he came out to support Kamala Harris,” she exclaimed, reminiscing about why she voted for him in the first place. “He’s just so good, so amazing.” This sentiment was echoed by others, as Clinton’s presence reignited excitement for the election.
Morris Porter, another supporter, felt reinvigorated after hearing Clinton speak. “He has actually been through what she’s about to go through,” he noted. “He can recognize what is necessary to be able to run the country.” His confidence came from knowing that someone with real experience was backing Harris.
After stirring up excitement in Augusta, Clinton was set to make one more stop on his tour—Cleveland on Monday morning. Many attendees left the event feeling hopeful and inspired, reminding each other of the power of engaging in the political process and the importance of their vote.
As Augusta wrapped up an unforgettable evening, it’s clear that Clinton’s visit not only showed support for Harris but also kindled a renewed spirit among the community, making the journey to the 2024 election all the more thrilling!
