This past Sunday, folks in Augusta had quite the treat when former President Bill Clinton made an appearance in the city. The event took place at the IBEW Local Union 1579 headquarters, where more than 150 eager attendees packed into an upstairs room to catch a glimpse of the man who once led the nation. Clinton is currently on a nationwide tour, promoting Vice President Kamala Harris as she gears up for the 2024 election.
As Clinton stepped onto the stage, the room buzzed with excitement. After a warm welcome, he dove right into his speech. “Hillary and I endorsed her within an hour of her becoming a candidate,” Clinton noted, reminiscing about the moment they decided to support Harris. He passionately shared, “I said, ‘Send me to the country,’ and I really wanted to go after I saw that vice presidential debate. Oh my goodness, that JD Vance, he gave us hillbillies a bad name.”
His speech lasted just over 20 minutes, but it was rich in insight and reflection. Clinton compared the plans of Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, offering perspectives from his own experience in the Oval Office. “I’m actually a pretty good judge for this election because I had the job… and I know both the candidates,” he remarked, touching on the lengthy friendship between Hillary and Harris that dates back 30 years to their days as lawyers. “Kamala is still younger, and Hillary (she never lets me forget) is younger than me… but the one thing we should not be playing games with is the health and welfare of the American people.”
While it was clear where Clinton’s loyalty lies, he also emphasized the importance of unity as the election approaches. “There are things we have to do, but we can’t get there if we spend all our time fighting each other,” he said. “I am sick and tired of everybody going, ‘This is us and them,’ ‘this’ and ‘us’ and ‘them, that’.” His call for togetherness resonated with many in the crowd, highlighting a desire to move past divisive rhetoric.
For attendees like Diane Via, the evening was a memorable experience. “I thought it was wonderful that he came out to support Kamala Harris,” she expressed. “His speech reminded me of why I voted for him in the first place when I got to vote for him. He’s just so good, so amazing.”
Another audience member, Morris Porter, echoed this sentiment, stating that Clinton’s insights reinforced his confidence in voting for Harris. “He has actually been through what she’s about to go through,” he remarked. “He can recognize what is necessary to be able to run the country.”
After his engaging speech in Augusta, Clinton was set to head to Cleveland on Monday morning for yet another stop on his promotional tour for Harris. As he journeys through the country, he continues to spark conversations about the future of American leadership and the power of unity in politics.
As Sunday night came to a close in Augusta, the collective mood in the room echoed a sense of hope and enthusiasm for the upcoming election. With influential voices like Bill Clinton stepping out to support their candidates, many are left feeling energized for the next chapter in American politics.
