In Aiken, South Carolina, the excitement was palpable as two best friends, Juliana “Jules” Gray and Ava Shabahrami, embarked on their first day of college together. Both young women, who have Down syndrome, are members of the USCA-Life program at the University of South Carolina in Aiken. This special two-year program is designed for students with disabilities, offering them valuable skills and experiences in a collegiate environment.

A Dream Come True

For Ava and Jules, attending college was a dream many thought wouldn’t come true for them. However, with their enrollment in the USCA-Life program, that dream has become a reality. As they walked onto the bustling campus, their adventure was just beginning. Both students expressed enthusiasm about being together for this significant milestone, declaring, “This year is going to be our best one yet!”

The program is structured to provide students with essential life skills, academic support, and preparation for future jobs. Ava and Jules will have the chance to participate in classes that are tailored to their individual needs, ensuring they gain the most from their college experience.

Support from Family

Ava’s mother, Patricia Gates, shared how much she’s seen Ava grow since being accepted into the program. “Since they got accepted, the confidence that she has developed is incredible. She’s excited to pick out what’s going in her room and truly finding herself,” Patricia said. This journey signifies not just academic growth, but also a step toward independence for both girls.

Moreover, Jules’ mother, Tony Gray, echoed similar sentiments about her daughter’s excitement. “These girls are going to be so focused on each other and all their new friends that they won’t have time to miss us,” Tony pointed out. Daily Life on Campus

While Jules and Ava do not share a dorm room, they will spend a significant amount of time together. Their daily routines will include breakfast, classes, lunch, and dinner, creating a structured yet enjoyable college life. As Jennifer Connelly, the program’s teacher and coordinator, noted, “These students are so happy to be here, and everyone is welcoming them with open arms. It really feels like home.” The university strives to make each student feel like a regular college participant, fostering a sense of belonging.

Encouraging Words

The mothers of Ava and Jules were not shy about expressing their pride and hopes for their daughters as they stepped into this new chapter of their lives. Patricia encouraged Ava by saying, “Ava, we made it! You’re going to do amazing things and meet so many people.” Similarly, Tony emphasized to Jules, “I know this is an exciting time, and I’m so proud of you. Take advantage of every opportunity.”

Fundraising for Future Students

To celebrate Ava and Jules’ journey and to raise funds for scholarship opportunities for other students in the program, the USCA-Life program will host a special benefit concert titled “Ava and Jules Rockin’ for College.” Scheduled for September 27, the concert aims to raise awareness and support, with tickets priced at $10 for kids ages 12 and up, while children under 12 will get in free.

As explained by Adrienne Patterson, assistant director of USCA-Life, raising awareness about the program is crucial: “Many people are still unaware of this opportunity for their children with intellectual disabilities.” The program costs about $40,000 a year, and merit-based scholarships are available for families in need.

This new chapter for Jules and Ava is not just a personal victory; it’s a testament to what can be achieved when friends support each other and strive toward shared goals.
