It’s December 2024 in Beech Island, and as the temperature drops to a cozy 64°F during the day and 47°F at night, the local gardening scene is bustling, even as winter tries to claim its territory. The air is crisp, and while some outdoor activities take a back seat, there are plenty of warm and inviting projects keeping the community engaged.
In a local greenhouse, esteemed garden curator and nursery owner Jenks Farmer is working diligently to prepare sage for rooting. It’s an essential task as the cool weather signals a temporary halt to the growing season. “It’s all about making the most of our time before winter really settles in,” notes Farmer, who also holds the title of an accomplished author.
On December 3, he shared his journey in maximizing plant growth despite the impending chill, highlighting that sage, a resilient plant suitable for the region’s heat and humidity, will become a staple for local culinary enthusiasts come spring. “I’ve provided cuttings for Aiken High School’s upcoming plant sale, so that should be exciting!” he adds with enthusiasm.
“It’s a great time to gather and learn something new while getting into the holiday spirit!” exclaimed one participant, Pao Lin Hatch, as she sorted through fragrant options. Another attendee, Karyn Bland, chimed in, “I love working with locally sourced materials. It makes it more personal.” The joy in the room was palpable as laughter and holiday music filled the air.
Tom’s wife, Debbie Sawyer, was also busy crafting a variety of wreaths at their farm. “It’s a family affair! I have a couple of wonderful elves helping me,” she said, referring to her dedicated helpers who assist with wreath-making. “They don’t last long on the table once people see them!”
Despite challenges from weather and seasonal changes, the resilience of the community shines through. “This time of year, we have to adapt,” remarked Jacob Laughlin. “There isn’t much growing in the greenhouse, but workshops like these keep the spirit alive!”
So whether you’re snipping greens for a wreath or dreaming of delicious sage recipes, Beech Island is alive with activity. The community is ready, armed with creativity and a spirit that thrives even in the coldest of seasons!
