Mayor Garnett Johnson recently held a news conference on October 3, giving us the latest updates on the recovery efforts, and let me tell you, there are some important things happening!

Curfew Extension to Help Residents

First off, we’ve got some good news. The city has extended the curfew to 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. This change should definitely make it easier for those of us who work late hours or need to run errands. As Mayor Johnson put it, “We seem to be getting our sea legs under us,” which is exactly the kind of optimism we need right now!

Progress with Power and Water

Just so you know, about 40% of our neighbors are still without power, but progress is being made. Power may be restored in some areas by October 14, according to Georgia Power’s latest estimates. As for water services, the city is currently under a boil water advisory. However, Mayor Johnson assured us that things are looking up. He said, “It may be hours” until most services are fully restored. So hang tight; help is on the way!

Relief Centers and Resources

There’s also amazing support coming from relief centers that are busy distributing resources to those in need. Fire Chief and Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Antonio Burden announced that community strike teams are out there, providing assistance to those who can’t reach distribution points. They’re working alongside the Georgia National Guard and the Richmond County Marshal’s Office to ensure everybody in our city gets what they need!

Watch Out for Scammers!

However, with all this assistance underway, the city leaders did have a word of caution. They warned that after disasters, scams can pop up. Some people may claim to be affiliated with FEMA, but you should be aware that real FEMA crews won’t be out until next week. Stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity! Mayor Johnson urged everyone to “keep an eye out” for potential scams as they can be quite sneaky.

Storm Debris Cleanup

As we work on recovery, there’s going to be a big focus on storm debris cleanup. Instead of tossing everything into the landfill, the city suggests piling up debris like trees and limbs on the right-of-way for easier pickup. Just a reminder: keep it separate from other waste to help with the cleanup process. “We want to ensure we can get 100% reimbursed,” noted Mayor Johnson.

Road Clearances and Garbage Collection

Speaking of cleanup, the Engineering Director Hameed Malik said garbage collection is in a “recovery” week. This means pickups might be a bit hit-or-miss. Regular collection of household waste, yard debris, and recycling will kick back into gear next week, which is great news for all of us trying to tidy up our neighborhoods.

As for the roads, we’ve got about 40 crews working tirelessly across various zones to clear traffic. The goal? To have everything fully accessible and cleaned up in about two months. So, if you see a bunch of trucks out there next week, that’s the army of cleanup crews doing their thing!
