However, Georgia Power recently updated its customers, indicating that the wait will be much longer for many households.

As of Wednesday, some residents found out they may have to endure the discomfort for more than a week before their power returns. For instance, Milli Cassell was informed that her power restoration has been pushed back to October 9. She shared, “It’s our only issue right now, but it puts a strain on life for basic necessities.” Interestingly, her power outage notification simply states that her electricity has been restored, even though that’s not the reality at her home.

Schools and Families Feeling the Pressure

The power situation isn’t just affecting adults; families with children are also feeling the strain. Richmond County schools in Augusta extended their closure after Hurricane Helene, keeping students at home longer as the community works through restoration challenges. Felisha Brown, another resident, also saw her restoration date moved to October 9. She remarked, “The extension is a headache, but I understand what steps are needed to have it restored. As long as they are safe doing their job, I’m good.” Despite her frustration, she seemed to have a positive outlook.

Meanwhile, Jenny Gottschalk is waiting for power to be back by October 10. She expressed her frustration, saying, “The extension on the power restoration is frustrating, to say the least. I miss my A/C and steady internet access. But we are managing. The nights are uncomfortable but manageable.” Such sentiments echo in homes across Augusta as residents adapt to life without basic comforts.

Another resident, Amy Lee Shaw, echoed similar frustrations. Her power restoration has also been tentatively moved to October 10. She described the tough situation of entertaining children while trying to stay cool and restore her home. City Officials Address the Community’s Concerns

During a press conference, Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson gave insight into the restoration efforts. He explained that the power grid has suffered extensive damage across the area. “Throughout this community, there are almost 10,000 linemen working hard to restore power. Their response has been great, but some neighborhoods were just decimated. It’s not just about power lines; it’s transmission lines, transformers, and a lot of things that have been affected,” he stated while taking stock of the situation.

As of Thursday night, the statistics are telling: over 33,000 customers without power in Richmond County, more than 24,000 in Columbia County, and about 1,500 in Burke County all paint a picture of the enormous scope of the restoration process.
