Augusta Opens Shelters as Cold Weather Hits the City

Augusta Opens Shelters as Temperatures Take a Nosedive

It’s a brisk day in Augusta, with temperatures soaring to a high of just 47°F, and as the sun sets, things are expected to get even chillier, dipping down to about 27°F overnight. As the cold air sweeps across the city, local officials are turning their attention to those who might be feeling the bite of winter the hardest.

Multiple Shelters Ready to Serve

In a bid to keep everyone safe and warm, Augusta city officials have set up several overnight shelters that are open for both daytime and nighttime use. This means those without a warm place to stay can find refuge against the elements. If you know someone who is struggling with the cold, now is the time to lend a helping hand by letting them know about these options.

Free Rides for Those in Need

To make accessing these shelters even easier, Augusta Transit is stepping up to the plate by offering free transportation to the overnight shelters. Talk about a great way to spread some community cheer! This special bus service kicks off at 3 p.m. and will continue running until 8 p.m. each night. So, if you need a lift, just give them a call at (706) 821-1719 before 8 p.m., and they’ll help you get there. However, keep in mind that this free ride service doesn’t extend to the daytime warming centers.

Using Regular Routes for Daytime Shelters

For those looking to utilize the daytime shelters, you can hop on any of Augusta Transit’s normal bus routes during their standard operating hours. It’s a straightforward option for getting to a warm spot while the sun’s still shining.

How to Get Shelter Clearance

Before you can settle into one of the overnight shelters, you’ll need to get a shelter clearance. To do this, simply swing by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office before 5 p.m. for the necessary documentation. But if you happen to miss that window or can’t make it in person, don’t worry! Just reach out to the sheriff’s office dispatcher at (706) 821-1080, and a deputy will come to your location to help you out. That’s community service at its best!

Need Help or Have Questions?

If you have any questions regarding the shelters or transportation services, you can get in touch with Augusta Transit between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday, by calling (706) 821-1719. They’re more than willing to assist anyone in need, ensuring everyone has the resources they require to stay cozy this winter.

Weather Outlook

With clear skies and a crisp breeze coming from the north, it’s a reminder that winter is definitely here. Staying warm and safe is the priority, so please keep an eye out for friends and neighbors who might need some extra help battling the chill.

This time of year can be tough for many, but thanks to the city of Augusta and its various services, there’s hope and warmth to be found. Let’s all do our part to ensure our community members are cared for during this cold snap!
