In the city of Augusta, community spirit shines brightest in times of trouble. Since the passing of Hurricane Helene, a Category 1 hurricane that swept through our town, residents have come together to support one another through the chaos and destruction left in its wake.

The reality of living through a hurricane can be overwhelming. Many of us were lulled into a false sense of security as forecasts told us Helene would veer west toward Atlanta. We were certain we’d only face some heavy rain and a touch of wind. That assumption proved to be a costly mistake. As the old saying goes, “the calm before the storm” rang all too true when the winds and rain came down with unyielding force.

Unforeseen Damages

The morning after the hurricane hit was a scene straight out of a horror movie. An old oak tree that had been a proud guardian of our home since 1978 came crashing down, taking with it the kitchen and sun porch. The aftermath left gaping holes and significant leaks in our bedroom and den. Beyond the damage to our home, the impact reverberated throughout our community.

Tragically, reports tell us that a dozen individuals in Augusta lost their lives due to the storm, including a grandfather and a great-grandson. It’s heartbreaking to think about such loss, reminding us to cherish every moment with our loved ones.

A Community Unites

Despite the damage and heartbreak, the response from our neighbors has filled my heart with gratitude. As we navigated a world without electricity, water, and reliable communication, two brave neighbors climbed over the fallen trees on our property just to check on my husband and me. It was a sign of solidarity that we all needed during such distressing times.

Later that day, friends who are like family made their way through downed power lines and impassable roads to bring us comfort. They welcomed us into their home, offering warmth and a hot meal amidst the chaos. It’s in moments like these that we see the purest expressions of love and kindness – sharing a cup of coffee, a simple dinner, and offering a shoulder to lean on.

Finding Light in the Darkness

It’s remarkable how ordinary acts can become invaluable during challenging times. There’s something profound about the way community members have opened their doors and offered help in the face of adversity. These deeds are the essence of Christ’s message to “love our neighbor.” It’s an unadulterated reflection of hope and humanity shining through despair.

During these past few days, I’ve whispered countless prayers of thanksgiving. I am grateful for the friends willing to come by and lend a hand, for those who helped clear a path out of our property, and most importantly, for having a warm place to go, resources to fill my tank with gasoline, and a soft bed to collapse into at the end of the day.

Strength in Resilience

God truly is good, and amidst the mountains of debris in our lives, so many blessings remain. We have endured a testing time, but challenges help us recognize what we have and who we love. The support pouring in from local communities, state resources, and even federal assistance shows us we are not alone.

As we face the task of recovery, we remember that many others across the world live without the conveniences we often take for granted. We can survive, even thrive, without electricity or air conditioning for a spell. We don’t need a waterproof house in the middle of September. At least it’s not August with sweltering heat.

Looking Ahead

In the words of Julian of Norwich, “All will be well, and all manner of things will be well.” That mantra is something we can hold onto as we begin to pick up the pieces. More importantly, when things settle down, let’s remember this time. Let’s not forget how we pulled together in love, compassion, and support. After all, in our toughest moments, perhaps the most valuable lesson of all is to keep loving and supporting one another.
