In the heart of Augusta, Georgia, a wave of generosity is sweeping through the community as local organizations and residents come together to support those in need, particularly in the aftermath of a recent storm. At the forefront of this effort is The Sanctuary at GAP Ministries, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping families and individuals navigate tough times.
After the storm caused damage to their facility, GAP Ministries had to temporarily close its doors for a week. However, the resilient team quickly bounced back and reopened, welcoming back both familiar faces and new visitors they’re now able to assist. “It was beautiful to see some of the faces of people we’ve been worried about and then also to be able to help more people that we now know we will see as a result of the storm,” said Nomi Stanton, the executive director of GAP Ministries. This reopening has ignited a renewed sense of hope in the community, showcasing the organization’s unwavering commitment to its mission.
The recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene are in full swing, and GAP Ministries is nowhere near alone in their mission. With a steady influx of donations pouring in from local and out-of-state organizations, the non-profit has established a network of support that helps amplify their abilities to serve the community. “We feel like right now more than ever collaborating makes us even stronger and able to really feel the need of the community, especially if this is the first time someone needs this kind of help,” Stanton explained, highlighting the power of working together to provide assistance.
GAP Ministries is a cornerstone in the Augusta community, having served those in need since 1979. Whether it’s providing food, helping individuals secure identification, or supplying essential household items such as diapers and adult incontinence products, the organization strives to meet the diverse needs of families. The recent surge in visitors, with numbers skyrocketing to nearly 270 families seeking assistance in a week, indicates just how crucial their services are now. “We’re seeing a really big need for diapers and adult incontinence products,” Stanton noted. “We’ve seen a huge increase just last week and in our food pantry as well.”
As Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, GAP Ministries doesn’t overlook the challenges women face while battling the disease. They continue to shine a light on these issues, reminding everyone of the collective responsibility of the community to support one another. Yet, as the demand for services grows, the organization recognizes the need for ongoing support. “Even though we’ve received a large amount of donations, we know that we are not going to be able to sustain if we continue to see a hike in need,” Stanton cautioned. She encouraged those who wish to help to contribute through their online channels or collaborate with other non-profits, fostering a broader impact.
For those who may need assistance from GAP Ministries, there is a straightforward process to access their resources. Individuals are required to fill out some paperwork in person, showcasing documentation on household size. For more details, they can visit the organization’s website or call them directly at 706-722-4408. The doors are open for in-person visits on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., providing a welcoming opportunity for the community to connect and receive support.
In these challenging times, organizations like GAP Ministries remind us of the importance of coming together. Find your way to contribute, and let’s ensure our Augusta community continues to thrive through kindness and collaboration.
