What a beautiful sunny day it is in Augusta! With temperatures reaching a delightful 82°F and only light winds from the north-northwest, the weather seems to be mirroring the excitement happening at two local elementary schools. Just recently, Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site, announced a generous $30,000 donation to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education in our community.
This substantial contribution will be split evenly between A. Dorothy Hains Elementary School in Augusta and Barnwell Elementary School in Barnwell, with each school receiving $15,000. What’s even more exciting is that this isn’t the first time SRMC has stepped up to help these schools. Last year, they made a similar investment, and the impact on students was so impressive that this year they decided to do it all over again!
During a recent visit to both schools, SRMC’s President and Program Manager, Dave Olson, couldn’t help but share his enthusiasm. “The improvements were outstanding,” he exclaimed as he recounted witnessing the remarkable growth in the schools’ STEM programs since their initial investment.
Thanks to last year’s funding, A. Dorothy Hains Elementary has successfully integrated coding and robotics into their curriculum, while Barnwell has revamped its media room with new furnishings and technology. Can you imagine kids immersing themselves in coding skills while working on real-world problems? Amazing, right?
Dr. Andrea Roberts, the Assistant Superintendent at A. Dorothy Hains, shared how the students are thriving. “They are problem solving and analyzing data as teams using the STEM materials we’ve acquired,” Roberts said. The excitement isn’t just limited to students; faculty members are also feeling energized by the new STEM kits. It’s all about collaboration and innovation in today’s classrooms!
Meanwhile, over at Barnwell Elementary, Assistant Superintendent Franklin McCormack is equally enthusiastic about how the donation will further enhance their media team. “The media team has been a tremendous success,” he said proudly. With the help of the additional funding, they plan to introduce significant changes that will elevate their broadcast and journalism program.
It’s encouraging to hear that students are eager to be part of the program, with many submitting applications to join the Barnwell Elementary School Broadcast and Journalism Program. The students are not just learning; they’re taking leadership roles within their communities. Talk about fostering tomorrow’s leaders!
Finally, we can’t overlook the long-term benefits of these STEM programs. With grants like these, schools can buy essential equipment and supplies that lead to heightened student engagement and interest in STEM careers. Who knows? A few of these bright young minds might just be the engineers and scientists of the future!
As we bask in this beautiful weather and witness these inspiring developments in our schools, let’s take a moment to appreciate the positive changes happening in education. Thanks to Savannah River Mission Completion, students in Augusta and Barnwell are not just able to learn—they are inspired to dream big and explore new possibilities!
