Community Rallies to Aid Families Impacted by Augusta Apartment Fire
The Aftermath of the Fire
AUGUSTA, GA – Within mere minutes, the tranquility of a normal day was shattered, altering the lives of many families. All that remains now is a swath of debris marked by yellow caution tape, lost rooftops, and black residue from the flames. An unexpected fire outbreak on a recent Wednesday night devastated 16 units at the Nine Two Six West apartment complex, standing in the 900 block of Stevens Creek Road.
Ron Mantey, a resident of the apartment complex for 16 years, described the harrowing experience, recalibrating disbelief into a devastating reality. The chilling echoes of screams dovetailed with the horrifying sight of the intensifying flames engulfing the top of the building.
Shock and Disbelief Settles In
Mantey’s confusion was palpable as he grappled to understand the cause of the disaster. Whether it was fireworks, careless use, or an unseen hazard, the reality remained that the fire unfolded swiftly, leaving devastated families grappling with the aftermath.
Despite the smoke having cleared, Mantey states that a sense of shock and disbelief persists among the victims. He referred to the incident as a “tragic event,” adding, “A lot of people lost everything they owned in this building. It was sixteen families in that building and they lost everything.”
The losses are spread across a diverse group of individuals, including local school teachers to military servicemen—an unwelcome burden during what was supposed to be a celebration of independence during the Fourth of July weekend.

Despite the loss, the spirit of unity and support has shone bright in the face of adversity. Mantey observed that the broader CSRA community had rallied to provide relief for the affected families.
“But the people round here starting to join, I’ll put it that way, to help them get through this tragedy. And actually, I’m very pleased by it,” Mantey said.
At the end of the day, homes may be devoid of physical material possessions, but the expression of community solidarity has filled the hearts of the affected. Mantey eloquently summed up the sentiment of unity in adversity, “It’s dog eat dog around here, but these people have joined together to help these people, which is a really ‘God bless’ thing.”
