Aiken, S.C. – The vibrant event known as Aiken’s Makin is in full swing, attracting large crowds eager to explore a wide variety of local crafts and goods. Held annually, this celebration of arts and crafts showcases the talent of local artisans and draws visitors from near and far. Despite the festival being a bustling hub of activity, a striking observation arises: the overwhelming majority of attendees appear to be women.
Attendees queued to navigate through rows of colorful booths filled with handmade items, gourmet treats, and unique crafts. As one attendee humorously noted, “Duh, absolutely! Duh, that’s for sure. We have the money,” reflecting the prevalent demographic at the event. It seems women are not only the primary shoppers but also the driving force behind many of the crafts available for sale.
As visitors wander around, it becomes clear that many booth owners gear their products toward female shoppers. Delicate jewelry, artisanal candles, and decorative home items dominate many stalls. However, some vendors are taking a risk by stepping outside traditional gender norms in their offerings.
Among the colorful tents and booths, one vendor stood out with a booth dedicated to men’s products. Dylan Britt at the Magnanimous Beard Products booth remarked, “I know, I hear that a lot. It’s like ‘finally, a man’s booth.’” Here, patrons could find grooming products specifically for men, challenging the dominant female-oriented trend of the market. Yet, the question remains: How many men are truly shopping at this event?
Although many men can be seen at the festival, they often appear to be accompanying the women in their lives. When asked if he was here by choice, Wayne Williams sheepishly admitted, “Yes, of course,” confirming that many men are likely just along for the ride.
Despite the predominance of female shoppers, vendors like Ronnie Piper of the leather goods booth provide products that seem to cater more to men. His booth features leather belts and wallets, which may seem out of place in a sea of earrings and decorative items. Piper joked about selling items typically marketed to men in an event with such a strong female presence, saying, “It’s like trying to sell freezers at the North Pole.”
In addition to grooming products and leather goods, attendees can also find a range of items appealing to men. Unique metal signs featuring college and professional sports teams, as well as car-themed decor, provide a fun addition to the festival. “There’s enough men’s things here to make you happy,” Wayne assured fellow attendees.
Aiken’s Makin continues to prove that there’s something for everyone at the festival. While women play a central role as shoppers, one can also find items that appeal to men’s interests along the stalls. With crafts that range from stunning jewelry to rugged home decorations, the festival fosters a welcoming atmosphere for all.
As the event unfolds, it becomes clear that Aiken’s Makin is not just a showcase of crafts but a melting pot of interests and demographics. With such a variety of attractions, there’s no denying this beloved event is a celebration that brings the entire community together.
