Aiken Community Unites Against Human Trafficking Crisis

Aiken Woman Takes Action Against Human Trafficking

A Growing Crisis in Aiken County

Aiken, S.C. is facing a serious issue that many residents may not fully understand. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has reported that Aiken County ranks among the top five counties in the state for human trafficking cases. In 2023 alone, the state recorded over 350 cases, with nearly 500 potential victims. This alarming trend has prompted local residents, including Dominique Bunton, to take proactive measures to combat this crisis.

The Mission of Bridge 2 Home

Dominique Bunton, the founder of Bridge 2 Home, has dedicated her efforts to help young victims of human trafficking find safety and healing. “Most of us think of home as our safe space,” she explained, emphasizing the importance of a nurturing environment. “The norm of the bridge is to simulate family,” she added, highlighting the mission to create a supportive community for those in need.

Bridge 2 Home operates a facility with three bedrooms, accommodating up to six girls aged 12 to 17 who have suffered from sex trafficking and sexual exploitation. Bunton understands the added challenges these children face; many come with a history of severe trauma that affects their behavior and emotional health.

Creating a Safe and Supportive Environment

When these girls arrive at Bridge 2 Home, they receive much more than shelter. “If you live in a family unit, you’re going to eat together, especially dinner,” Bunton described, explaining how communal meals provide opportunities for the girls to talk about their days and share experiences. This setup, which mirrors a traditional home life, is essential for fostering connections among the girls and helping them feel valued.

Bunton emphasized that the girls at Bridge 2 Home are often marginalized and come from troubled backgrounds. “Their lives are as important as mine. It is as important as yours,” she stated passionately. Many of these children struggle in school and don’t see a path to a better future. Through Bridge 2 Home, Bunton aims to offer them a chance, letting them know they matter and that they are not alone.

How the Community Can Help

Bridge 2 Home is actively seeking community support to expand its efforts against human trafficking. On October 12, the organization will host a Runn for Freedom 5k event, with all proceeds going directly to the program. This initiative aims not only to raise funds but also to raise awareness about the urgent issue of human trafficking in the region.

For those looking to contribute or learn more about Bridge 2 Home, detailed information is available on their website: www.thebridge2home.com. Donations, awareness campaigns, and participation in community events can all make a significant difference in the lives of young victims.

The Impact of Human Trafficking

The severity of the human trafficking crisis extends beyond just statistics. It affects real lives, with lasting consequences for individuals and communities. The statistics may seem distant, but behind each number is a person—often a child—who has faced unimaginable struggles. Addressing this issue requires collective awareness and action from every segment of the community.

Conclusion

As Aiken County continues to grapple with the alarming rise in human trafficking cases, local efforts such as those led by Dominique Bunton and Bridge 2 Home offer hope. By creating a safe haven for young victims and promoting community awareness, there is a chance to turn the tide against this growing problem. With the support of residents, Aiken can be a part of the solution in fighting human trafficking, ensuring that every child has a safe place to call home.
