The evening was filled with cheers, excitement, and a strong sense of community as 14 bright young competitors from local elementary and middle schools went head-to-head in a spelling showdown.
This much-anticipated event had everyone buzzing with anticipation. Aiken County’s own Superintendent King Laurence shared his delight at the festivities, calling it a great night of fun. Several key figures took on the role of judges, including the enthusiastic Director of Curriculum Support, a celebrated 2023 District Teacher of the Year, and a retired editor known for his contributions to the community.
The spelling bee put students through their paces with a series of challenging words. Participants faced off against terms like Bunsen burner and sentinel, showcasing just how much these talented individuals had prepared for this moment. Among them was ten-year-old Dorothea Viner from Belvedere Elementary School, a name that is sure to be remembered after her remarkable performance in the competition. With poise and confidence, Dorothea claimed the coveted title by perfectly spelling Erlenmeyer flask. In total, the top five contestants are poised for the next challenge, as they prepare for the regional spelling bee set for March 16 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Accompanying Dorothea and Grant are Jada Brown from Aiken Intermediate School, Caleb Rojas Bohn from Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle School, and Carter Little from Jackson STEM Magnet Middle School. What a talented group!
