Oh, Aiken! If you’re looking for a way to kick off the holiday season with some delightful music, you’re in luck! This year, St. John’s Methodist Church is set to dazzle our community with an enchanting performance of Handel’s “Messiah” that everyone can be a part of! Mark your calendars for this Sunday, November 24, at 3 p.m., because you won’t want to miss out on this unique musical experience.
So, you might be wondering, what exactly is a Scratch Messiah? It’s a fantastic concept that allows singers from all walks of life—whether you’re an experienced vocalist or simply love to sing in the shower—to join together in a joyous celebration of music. This performance invites everyone to sing along either from a seat in the audience or right alongside the talented choir and orchestra in the choir loft. Talk about getting in the holiday spirit!
Dr. Matt Caine, the director of traditional music at St. John’s, has taken it upon himself to revive a cherished tradition in the Aiken area. “For many years, we had an annual performance of Part I of ‘Messiah’ with choir, orchestra, and soloists,” he shares. Unfortunately, this tradition faded away, but Dr. Caine decided to bring a little joy back into the community with this sing-a-long event. Last year’s inaugural Scratch Messiah was such a hit that it became clear this should be an annual affair!
With the community’s enthusiasm and support, the second Scratch Messiah promises to be even bigger than the first. Dr. Caine invites singers of all levels to join in, whether or not they’ve rehearsed beforehand—no stress, just pure holiday cheer! “Many in the community asked me to make this an annual tradition, so here we are!” he beams.
This delightful concert is part of the church’s “Under the Steeple” music series, which brings together local musicians and ensembles for free performances throughout the year. It’s a marvelous way for the church to give back to the community and spread joy through music. Thanks to the generosity of church members, philanthropists, and local businesses, this musical event can be enjoyed at no cost to attendees. Isn’t that amazing?
If you’re a fan of the heavenly sounds of choir and orchestra, or just love the festive spirit, this is the perfect event for you. Not only can you enjoy a wonderful afternoon of music, but you’ll also be part of something special—an opportunity to sing along with fellow community members. And let’s face it, what’s better than singing your favorite holiday tunes?
Here’s what you need to know:
It’s going to be a wonderful time, and whether you’re singing or just clapping along, your presence will surely add to the festive atmosphere. So, come on out, Aiken, and let’s fill the church with the beautiful sounds of holiday cheer!
