Aiken, SC Faces Wind and Flood Advisories While Spreading Holiday Cheer

Aiken, SC: Weather Woes and Holiday Cheer Unite

Aiken, South Carolina, is bracing itself for some blustery weather while also dazzling in the spirit of the season! As we dive into the season of giving, it’s important to stay informed about the Lake Wind Advisory and a Flood Advisory that has recently been announced in the area. So, grab a cup of hot cocoa and sit tight as we unravel what’s happening in our charming town!

Windy Waters Ahead

This morning at 9 AM EST marks the start of a Lake Wind Advisory that’s expected to last until 1 AM EST tomorrow. Expect those west winds to whip up between 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching up to 35 mph! If you enjoy the serene beauty of our local lakes, this might not be the best time to explore. The strong winds and rough waves could make for some hazardous conditions for small craft. A little extra caution is advised—unless you want your canoe turned upside down!

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

But wait, there’s more! Just as the winds are picking up, a Flood Advisory was issued this morning at 5:19 AM EST for parts of central South Carolina, particularly affecting Newberry and Saluda Counties. This advisory will be in effect until 8:30 AM EST. The radar has shown heavy rainfall thanks to some cheeky thunderstorms that have been passing through, dumping between 1 and 2 inches of rain already. Don’t pack your umbrellas away just yet because an additional inch of rain is on the way!

Low-lying areas and those with poor drainage are being cautioned about potential minor flooding. Roadways could be dangerously submerged, especially on stretches of Interstate 26 between mile markers 72 and 88. The motto here? Turn around, don’t drown! Your safety is more important than getting to your destination quickly. If you come across flooded roads, be smart and find an alternate route.

Operation TDC Christmas: Spreading Joy

Now, amid all the weather shenanigans, let’s talk about something truly heartwarming happening in Aiken! The Tri-Development Center has started its annual Operation TDC Christmas, aiming to spread holiday cheer to adults with disabilities. Director Terrance Jackson expressed the importance of this program. “A lot of programs, community programs are geared towards kids and families,” he said, “and unfortunately, our population of people that we serve are forgotten about.”

At their gift-wrapping store located at 251 Laurens St in Aiken, visitors can find everything from free wrapping paper to ribbons and bows. And while shopping for your own loved ones, why not make a charitable donation? All proceeds go directly into purchasing gifts for those who truly deserve a little extra love during the holidays.

One heartfelt participant, Anthony Waters, expressed his gratitude saying, “For me, I enjoy receiving gifts from people… how much time and effort they put in to wrap them.” Such a simple yet profound statement that captures the essence of giving this time of year! He also holds a beautiful wish for everyone, hoping they enjoy a good Christmas with their family members.

Weathering the Storm

With a mix of rain and wind on the horizon, and the sweet spirit of giving growing in our community, Aiken is certainly bustling! As we navigate through the highs and lows of the season, remember to take care of yourself and each other. Check the weather updates frequently and stay safe on the roads, and if you’re feeling the holiday spirit, consider stopping by the Tri-Development Center to spread some joy!

Whatever the weather may throw our way, the heartwarming efforts of our community remind us that together, we can weather the storm and celebrate the season with love and compassion!
