Downtown Aiken’s Retail Scene Shines Bright This Holiday Season

In the charming city of Aiken, the spirit of the holiday season was alive and well, despite the challenges posed by a shortened shopping season. With New Year’s Eve just days away, local retailers reflected on a surprisingly strong performance that has left them feeling optimistic as they look toward 2025.

Festive Weather Forecast

The weather on December 30, 2024, contributed to positive vibes in downtown Aiken, with a beautiful mix of clouds and sun, a pleasant high of 64°F, and gentle winds from the WSW. Evening temperatures dipped to around 43°F, making for a cozy night out as shoppers took advantage of the stores still buzzing with post-Christmas sales while bundled up in their favorite winter wear.

Success Stories from Local Retailers

Max Watt, co-owner of Vikki’s … A Unique Boutique, expressed his delight in reporting a successful holiday season. Thanks to brisk sales and early December discounts, the boutique thrived, offering items at half price and making it a go-to stop for holiday shoppers. Vikki’s has also expanded, with a brand-new store called Oopsie Daisy that specializes in dancewear, a fantastic addition given the many dance studios popping up in Aiken.

Meanwhile, Tom Williams, owner of Floyd & Green Fine Jewelers, echoed this positive sentiment, noting that the holiday period, from Thanksgiving through Christmas, brought in fantastic retail sales. A particularly busy day on December 26 saw many happy customers opting for upgrades and spending their gift cards.

Community Support Shines Bright

Marsha “Breeze” Kryshtalowych from Pipe Dreams mentioned the terrific growth experienced in business since relocating to a new spot on Whiskey Road seven years ago. The sense of community support has been a crucial factor in retail success, and the camaraderie among businesses in downtown Aiken continues to foster positivity and a vibrant shopping atmosphere.

Changes in Retail Landscape

Despite concerns about the shorter holiday shopping season due to a late Thanksgiving, many store owners found hope in the record retail traffic and higher sales per transaction. Looking ahead, Colliers has been contracted by the city to handle the sale of Hotel Aiken and surrounding properties, all part of a broader strategy to enhance downtown’s appeal and address evolving needs. The city purchased these properties in 2021 with plans to restore historical sites while ensuring the local identity remains front and center.

Future Projects and Community Safety Nets

Under consideration are various properties like a historical hotel site, which promises to benefit from the annual flood of tourists visiting the nearby Augusta National Golf Club during the Masters Tournament. This initiative aligns with the city’s continued commitment to vibrant retail and community growth.
