In Aiken, things took a serious turn recently when a local man was arrested following some truly alarming allegations involving domestic violence that has left the community shaken. The incident occurred on November 18, when 34-year-old Devron Markiest McKevie was apprehended after allegedly pushing a woman to the ground, choking her, and making threatening remarks about a firearm.
Law enforcement officers first arrived at the scene on October 24, responding to reports of shots fired at the intersection of Hahn Avenue and Aldrich Street in the Crosland Park neighborhood located on Aiken’s Northside. After assessing the situation and clearing the area, one woman reached out to the officers claiming she had been involved in a dangerous encounter where a gun was discharged.
The unfortunate sequence of events began before the couple even made it to Aiken. The woman told Officer J.M. Gonzalez that she and McKevie had started arguing in Georgia. Their heated exchange only intensified as they continued it in an apartment located on Eider Circle in Aiken.
According to the police reports, during the argument, things escalated drastically when McKevie allegedly pushed the woman to the ground and strangled her, blocking her airways with his hands. Thankfully, a friend intervened and managed to separate the two before things got any worse.
However, the situation didn’t end there. As the woman attempted to leave the scene, McKevie allegedly followed her and began to make threats. She started recording the encounter on her phone, capturing a terrifying moment where he was seen carrying a black handgun. In the video, McKevie is reportedly demanding that the woman unlock the door of her vehicle. When she didn’t comply, he fired off four to five shots into the air, causing panic and concern for safety.
Police conducted a criminal history check on McKevie, confirming that he was not prohibited from owning a firearm. When questioned by authorities, McKevie chose not to share his side of the story, which has led to a number of serious charges being filed against him.
McKevie now faces multiple charges: domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature, which is classified as a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison; possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, also a felony that could lead to an additional five years; and firing a weapon within city limits, which is a misdemeanor.
Aiken County Magistrate Tracey Carroll has set bail with $20,000 for the domestic violence charge, $10,000 for the weapon charge, and $1,087.50 for the firing within city limits charge. McKevie’s next court appearance is scheduled for 10 a.m. on March 14.
This alarming incident shines a spotlight on the issue of domestic violence within our communities. As these events unfold, it serves as an important reminder of how crucial it is for everyone to stay vigilant and support one another when it comes to safety and well-being.
We encourage everyone to reach out to local resources if you or someone you know may be struggling with domestic violence or any kind of threatening situations.
Stay safe, Aiken, and remember to look out for each other!
