As the countdown to Election Day begins, Aiken County is buzzing with activity as candidates make their final pushes to engage voters. With just one week to go, the community is eager to hear from the contenders vying for the position of sheriff. One prominent figure in this race is Lucas Grant, the Democratic candidate and current sergeant at the Wagener Police Department.
Lucas Grant isn’t new to the world of law enforcement. With a rich background that includes helping to dismantle nearly 100 gangs and seizing over 250 firearms, his experience speaks volumes. He boasts an impressive near 95% arrest and conviction rate in homicide cases, showcasing his commitment to keeping Aiken County safe. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled a pivotal moment back in 2013 when he sat down with Richmond County Sheriff Richard Roundtree to map out his ambitions. Now, that dream of becoming sheriff is closer than ever.
During a recent canvassing session, Lucas shared his vision for a safer Aiken County. A major priority for him is addressing school safety. Lucas pointed out that out of the 29 schools in the area, a staggering 22 lack resource officers. “I don’t want our parents sending their children to school or grandparents sending their children to school and having to worry because we don’t have an officer in those schools,” he expressed passionately. Lucas aims to tackle this issue right away, ensuring that children can feel safe in their learning environments.
Lucas Grant has outlined some strategic plans to enhance public safety in the community. He aims to increase the number of certified officers and establish specialized units to tackle issues like traffic violations and drug-related crimes. “We have 39 miles of interstate, not even patrol. So how do you think that narcotics or trafficking happens? Because we are not out doing our job,” he explained. He believes that filling officer vacancies through grant writing and improving response times could significantly reduce traffic accidents and save lives.
Building strong community ties is a central theme of Lucas’ campaign. He wants to establish programs such as ‘Kids and Cops’, designed to foster relationships between children and law enforcement. “Through that we are going to be able to build relationships with our youth, educate our youth, and they’re gonna see that we are here for them,” Lucas emphasized. His vision centers around being approachable, aware, and accountable to the community he seeks to serve.
As Aiken County prepares for the upcoming elections, early voting is ongoing and will continue until November 2. Election Day is set for Tuesday, November 5. Lucas Grant isn’t running unopposed; his challenger is Marty Sawyer, the Republican candidate for sheriff. With both candidates vying for the spotlight, Aiken County residents are encouraged to engage in the democratic process and make their voices heard.
No matter whom you choose to support, the upcoming election holds significant importance for the future of Aiken County. It’s not just about choosing a sheriff; it’s about ensuring a safe and vibrant community where everyone feels secure. As Lucas Grant continues to share his vision and engage with voters, the excitement is palpable in the air of Aiken County.
