Aiken County Schools Set to Reopen After Storm
Good morning, Aiken County! After a period of uncertainty following the impact of Tropical Storm Helene, it’s heartening to hear that our local schools will be ready to welcome back students. Superintendent Dr. Corey Murphy addressed the Aiken County Board of Education during their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 8, assuring everyone that preparations are on track for a smooth return.
Preparing for Students’ Return
As we gear up for the return of approximately 23,000 students after their fall break, the district’s efforts have focused on getting all facilities back to operational status. Dr. Murphy mentioned that most schools in the district were largely spared from major damage during the storm. Only one school, North Augusta Middle School, is still working on restoring power, but that is also expected to be resolved very soon.
Dr. Tim Yarborough, who is the chief officer of operations and student services, noted that the power restoration at North Augusta Middle School is in progress. Meanwhile, our dedicated teams in transportation, child nutrition, and school leadership are ensuring that everything is ready for the students’ return. They have been out driving the roads, restocking food supplies, and prepping classrooms—definitely a busy time!
Community Resilience
Unfortunately, the storm has affected some staff members deeply. Dr. Murphy shared that he is aware of eight employees whose homes are currently uninhabitable, reflecting the far-reaching impact of the storm. Additionally, some staff are still facing challenges with power and water outages.
“We fully anticipate learning of more hardships as students and staff return,” Dr. Murphy stated. This is a time when community support truly shines, and the response from local organizations, schools, and churches has been remarkable. Community resilience is in the spotlight, showcasing the spirit of Aiken County as residents come together to assist one another in recovery efforts.
Looking Ahead
As students and staff prepare to return to school on Monday, October 14, the district is also planning to reschedule any academic or attendance recovery sessions that were cancelled due to the storm. For those looking forward to the Coding Camp, there’s good news—students who were planning to participate will be prioritized for upcoming intersession opportunities in the spring.
Dr. Murphy emphasized that while the fall break didn’t go as many had anticipated, there’s still much to be thankful for. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with those who have been significantly affected by Helene, and we’re committed to providing support moving forward,” he said.
