In the charming city of Aiken, change is in the air following the recent elections, where residents turned out to cast their votes and make their voices heard. With the South Carolina House of Representatives gearing up for another season of lawmaking, some Aiken County voters will be welcoming a new representative come January. The spotlight shines on Republican Charlie Hartz, who emerged victorious against his Democratic opponent, Jensen Jennings, in the race for the House District 81 seat.
On election day, Hartz secured a commanding 68.71% of the vote with a total of 14,575 ballots cast in his favor. Jennings trailed behind with 6,612 votes, making up 31.17% of the total. It was a heartwarming win for Hartz, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from family, friends, and campaign volunteers. “I look forward to giving back to Aiken as much as it has given back to me over the last 25 years,” Hartz shared with a smile.
Hartz’s roots run deep in Aiken; he moved there to manage the Woodside community and later became a local entrepreneur, opening four Dunkin’ franchises, the Village Café, and Scenthound. Today, he proudly serves as the chairman of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce board, where he has been actively involved in fostering the community’s growth.
As Hartz steps into this new role, he will be taking over from Bart Blackwell, who has represented the district since 2017. Blackwell announced earlier this year that he wouldn’t run for another term, making way for fresh leadership in District 81, which covers most of Aiken’s Southside.
While Hartz’s victory is notable, he wasn’t the only candidate in Aiken to find success. In the neighboring House District 82, incumbent Bill Clyburn, a Democrat, triumphed over Republican challenger Suzy Spurgeon with 7,435 votes, which translated to 53.52%. Clyburn, who has been an active representative since 1995, expressed feeling “very good” about the outcome and looks forward to continuing his efforts to improve the district.
The success for Republicans didn’t stop with Hartz. In House District 83, Bill Hixon enjoyed a lone path to victory without any opposition, having represented the area since 2011. This district includes vibrant areas like North Augusta and southern Edgefield County.
Similarly, Melissa Oremus didn’t face any challengers in her bid for re-election in House District 84, representing the Midland Valley and Jackson areas. Like Hixon, she has held her post since 2019 without facing opposition.
Lastly, the reliable Bill Taylor also saw a smooth path in House District 86, where he has been serving since 2011. That district encompasses the lovely communities of Wagener, Salley, Perry, New Ellenton, and southern Lexington County.
As Aiken County gears up for a new chapter with their elected officials, residents are feeling a mix of excitement and anticipation. New leadership hopes to bring fresh ideas and improvements while continuing the legacy of those who came before them. As the clouds gather outside with a rain-soaked forecast, the future shines bright for the community, ripe with potential for growth and development.
So, whether you’re a long-time resident or new to Aiken, stay tuned! The upcoming legislative session will surely be one to watch as these representatives work hard to make a positive impact in the great state of South Carolina.
