Aiken County Animal Services has put forth a remarkable initiative, allowing local residents to foster a dog for a few days during the holiday. Teaming up with local non-profit FOTAS, the goal is to give some relief to shelter dogs during the shelter’s closure on Thursday. However, to foster a dog, individuals must reside in Aiken and arrive at the shelter by 5 p.m.
Under this initiative, the shelter provides all the required items for the dog’s care, including food, so fosterers can ensure the comfort of their canine guests until they return them on Friday or Saturday. This opportunity not only grants a short break for the dogs from the shelter but also offers them the comfort and affection of a family environment.
“We hate to think of our dogs being here alone at night when all that is going on so we try to identify those that really will struggle and just put them in a foster home where they can relax and get the comfort they really deserve,” said the program coordinator at FOTAS.
With the holiday season’s fireworks, there’s a higher chance for pets to run away due to fear and anxiety. If your pet happens to run away during the fireworks on Wednesday or Thursday, it’s advisable to check with local shelters as someone else might find your pet before you do.
This initiative not only provides an escape for the shelter dogs from the lonely nights but also gives potential dog adopters a chance to test the waters. It provides a real-world experience of having a pet at home. And if things go well, who knows, the short-term fostering might turn into a forever home for these adorable dogs.
Overall, this unique initiative by Aiken County Animal Services and FOTAS provides much-needed relief to the shelter dogs during the holiday season. It also offers potential pet owners an unparalleled opportunity to understand the responsibilities and rewards that come with pet parenting. The holiday season is a time of joy and giving, and it looks like the dogs in Aiken County are getting to partake in that spirit as well.
