Aiken, S.C. is becoming a focal point in the fight against human trafficking as the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reports that Aiken County ranks among the top five counties with the highest number of human trafficking cases in the state. Partnering with cities like Columbia and Myrtle Beach, which documented over 350 cases in 2023 involving nearly 500 potential victims, Aiken is facing a growing issue that needs urgent attention.
The alarming statistics have caught the attention of local community members, especially Dominique Bunton, the founder of Bridge 2 Home. This organization aims to assist young girls aged 12-17 who have fallen victim to sex trafficking. Bunton sees the dire need for a more compassionate approach to recovery. “The norm of the bridge is to simulate family,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of creating a nurturing environment for these vulnerable children.
Bridge 2 Home consists of three bedrooms and can accommodate up to six girls. Designed to be more like a home than an institution, the facility prioritizes creating a family-like atmosphere. “If you live in a family unit, you’re going to eat together, especially at dinner,” Bunton expressed. This communal dining not only fosters connection but also gives the girls a platform to discuss their daily lives, successes, and challenges.
Many of the girls that arrive at Bridge 2 Home carry additional layers of trauma from their past experiences. Bunton explained, “The kids that experience sexual exploitation have an additional layer of trauma. When they come into care, they often struggle to adjust because of their behaviors.” The support system at Bridge 2 Home is designed to address this trauma, offering them the tools and understanding they need to heal.
Bridge 2 Home aims not only to offer shelter but also a pathway to recovery. “Their lives are as important as mine. It is as important as yours,” Bunton added, highlighting the need for society to recognize the worth of these marginalized children. Many of these young girls battle significant challenges in school and may feel that they have little chance for a better future. Bunton’s mission is clear: to give them a fighting chance, to help them understand that they truly matter.
As part of their efforts, Bridge 2 Home is organizing the Runn for Freedom 5k on October 12, which aims to raise awareness and funds for their mission. All proceeds from the event will go directly to support the organization and its crucial work. “We need the community’s help to create a safe haven for these girls,” Bunton urged, inviting everyone to participate in the event that aims to bring change.
Community support plays a vital role in the fight against human trafficking. By participating in events like the Runn for Freedom 5k, local residents can contribute to the cause and help make a difference in the lives of young girls who have faced unimaginable challenges. As Aiken County grapples with the harsh realities of human trafficking, initiatives like Bridge 2 Home lead the way in providing hope and healing. The community’s involvement is pivotal in the battle against this growing issue, making it essential for residents to engage, support, and advocate for change. Together, Aiken can work towards a future where all children are safe and valued.
