Aiken’s Beloved Concert Band Continues to Thrive as Holiday Season Approaches
As the holiday season rolls into Aiken, the sweet sounds of music are filling the air, thanks to the vibrant and dedicated Aiken Concert Band. This local treasure has been bringing joy to the community for over six decades, and they’re not about to stop anytime soon! With their next performance set for December 3rd at the USC Aiken Etherredge Center, the band is all geared up to deliver a heartwarming concert filled with the spirit of Christmas.
From Humble Beginnings to a Musical Powerhouse
Back in the chilly winter of 1960, a few passionate musicians came together in an old airplane hangar at Aiken Airport, seeking to share their love for music. Little did they know then that they were laying the foundation for a concert band that would flourish and evolve into the vibrant group it is today.
With more than 80 members today, the Aiken Concert Band is a beautiful mix of all walks of life—retirees sharing their passion, college students honing their skills, professionals from all fields, and music teachers inspiring the next generation. Blake Allen, the leader of the French horn section, summed it up perfectly when he said, “Just because band ends in high school, it doesn’t mean you have to stop playing. This is the perfect outlet for that.”
A Unique Blend of Talent
Music director Todd Jenkins highlights an inspiring aspect of the band: around 10 current or retired band directors amongst its members! Jenkins, who also directs instrumental studies at USC Aiken, explains that the band absorbs and showcases high-level talent, fostering a creative environment that’s both challenging and rewarding.
Kent Hannibal, a percussionist and retired high school band director, joined the band in 2014 after relocating from Los Angeles. Captivated by the level of musicianship he encountered, he remarked, “You could tell immediately there were a lot of really good players in the group.” It’s evident that the band is a community of not just amateur musicians but seasoned performers too.
A Lasting Legacy
The founding members, who predominantly worked at the Savannah River Plant, created a musical legacy that has persisted through the years. From their first formal concert in 1962 to the bustling group we see today, the Aiken Concert Band has continually evolved, adapting to the influx of new talent and maintaining high musical standards.
The 1970s saw another pivotal moment when Roger and Barb Rollins moved to Aiken and breathed new life into the band. With Barb’s music education background, they gathered musicians and re-established the ensemble, fostering a love for music across the community. Barb recalls, “There was no air conditioning. Everybody had to bring their own music stands. We had nothing.” But they had a passion for music that would keep them going!
The Joy of Performance
As the upcoming Christmas concert approaches, excitement is building within the band. This time of year, they aim to bring the holiday spirit to life with enchanting melodies and festive cheer. Tickets are just $20 for what promises to be a memorable evening filled with classic Christmas tunes.
With their unique collaboration with USC Aiken, the concert band not only creates beautiful music but also inspires students and adults alike. Many gifted students from the university join the band, providing a fantastic opportunity to learn and perform in a larger ensemble.
