In the charming city of Aiken, South Carolina, residents gathered on September 7, 2024, to pay tribute to local heroes and remember the tragic events of September 11, 2001. With clear skies and temperatures around 58°F, the day set a perfect backdrop for the annual 9/11 and Local Heroes Memorial Walk, held at the H. Odell Weeks Activities Center.
People from all walks of life came together to show their support, with many participants donning firefighter gear as they honored the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. Volunteer firefighters from different departments across Aiken County participated enthusiastically, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community spirit. The sound of laughter and heartfelt conversations mingled with a solemn yet hopeful atmosphere as families and friends walked side by side, holding hands and sharing stories.
Among the participants was Johan Zamoscianyk, a former New York City firefighter who was on the frontlines during the 9/11 attacks. Holding his wife’s hand tightly, Zamoscianyk seemed to embody the very spirit of the event. “I walk to remember, and I walk to honor my friends that were lost on 9/11,” he shared, reflecting on the heavy toll that day took on first responders. “It’s a reminder of why we continue to support and honor those who serve our communities and our country.”
The walk was not only a tribute to the fallen on 9/11 but also a way to honor local heroes. Keaton Sizemore, president of the Aiken County Firefighters Association, noted the significance of remembering heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty. “Living in Aiken County, we wanted to honor local heroes who have passed away as well,” Sizemore added. The event featured photos of first responders and law enforcement officers who tragically lost their lives while serving their communities, providing poignant reminders scattered along the walking path.
The day encompassed more than just remembrance; it highlighted unity within the community. Groups of school children, like Logan, Julian, Lexi, Samuel, and Ashley, walked hand in hand with their families, reinforcing the idea that educating the younger generation about 9/11 and its heroes is essential. One local father, Adrian La Pan, expressed his desire to teach his kids about the importance of remembering such significant historical events. “It’s a good way to keep the memory alive and honor those who bravely serve,” he explained.
Proceeds from the walk went towards the Aiken County Firefighters Association, which plays a crucial role in training and equipping volunteer fire departments. Additionally, funds will support the Tunnels To Towers Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping families of fallen first responders and injured veterans. Zamoscianyk believes both the walk and the mission of Tunnels To Towers are vital in keeping the spirit of 9/11 alive. “We need to remember,” he emphasized.
As walkers made their way under an impressive flag strung between two fire trucks, the event felt like a family affair, with various local fire departments joining in camaraderie. Members of the Midland Valley Fire Department, including Chris Tock and his wife DeAnna, took pride in participating, representing the dedication and sacrifice inherent in the fire service. Attendees, like Michelle Ghant, found personal connections to the event, recalling their loved ones who served in law enforcement. “This is always near and dear to my heart,” Ghant said, embodying the emotional weight of the day.
Through shared stories, laughter, and solemn remembrance, the Aiken community once again came together, turning collective grief into a powerful message of love and respect for heroes, both past and present. By continuing to honor those who have sacrificed, they ensure that their legacy will never fade and that the spirit of unity will shine on.
