Aiken Prepares for a Musical Season with the Aiken Civic Orchestra
The city of Aiken is gearing up for an exciting musical journey as the Aiken Civic Orchestra prepares to launch its 13th season. This local orchestra, established by Music Director Adam DePriest, has continually evolved from its humble beginnings with just 12 string players to a full symphonic orchestra today, which includes winds, brass, and percussion. The orchestra is dedicated to showcasing local talent and offers a diverse range of musical performances throughout the season.
A Commitment to Community and Music
The Aiken Civic Orchestra, often referred to as ACO, plays an important role in the community, emphasizing its mission to engage both musicians and audiences from Aiken and the surrounding Central Savannah River Area. ACO performs approximately a dozen programs annually, covering a spectrum of musical styles, from contemporary hits to classic masterpieces and new works.
The orchestra collaborates frequently with various vocal ensembles and partners with numerous organizations, truly living up to its motto of “Celebrating community through music.”
Kickoff Concert: Simply Baroque
The 2024-2025 season opens with a concert titled Simply Baroque, scheduled for September 13 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. This event is part of their Chamber Series, which features smaller ensembles for a more intimate musical experience. The concert will present works from renowned Baroque composers such as J.S. Bach, G.F. Handel, and Antonio Vivaldi. The evening will prominently showcase Joy Hoffman, a skilled bassoonist who will perform Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto.
Highlighting Local Musicians
Joy Hoffman is no stranger to the stage; she has an impressive background, including performances with various symphonies and teaching positions at notable colleges. Alongside Hoffman, the Vega Harp Duo, consisting of harpists Vonda Darr and Carolyn Munford, will also take the stage during their concert on February 16, 2025. These musicians have been performing together for nearly two decades and bring a wealth of experience and passion for harp music.
Exploring Relationships through Music
Another concert to look forward to is Johannes and Clara, taking place on May 18, 2025. This concert explores the relationship between composers Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann, featuring Schumann’s only Piano Trio and Brahms’ Horn Trio. This performance was rescheduled from the previous season and will be held at George Funeral Home.
Classical Series Featuring Renowned Artists
On January 25, 2025, violinist Rachel Barton Pine will grace the stage for the ACO’s Classical Series concert. She is known for her passionate interpretations and has a strong discography that includes over 40 recordings. This concert will feature Max Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture along with his Scottish Symphony. The Aiken Civic Orchestra is excited to bring such talent to the community.
Annual Events and Collaborations
In addition to these special concerts, the Aiken Civic Orchestra will also host its annual Symphonic Spooktacular on October 25 and the Holiday Pops concert on December 20. These events embrace the festive spirit and invite families to enjoy musical fun.
As part of its aim to connect with the community, ACO performs in collaboration with the Augusta Chorale for both a Christmas concert on December 8 and a Spring concert on May 4. These concerts, featuring familiar arrangements and traditional favorites, promise to engage the audience and celebrate the joy of music together.

Tickets for all Classical Series concerts are available through the Etherredge Center Box Office, with general admission priced at $25 and students admitted free. Other events accept a suggested donation of $25 at the door.
