Aiken Bids Farewell to Captain Marty Sawyer: A Fond Retirement Celebration

On a chilly December afternoon in Aiken, the air buzzed with a mix of nostalgia and excitement as Captain Marty Sawyer wrapped up an illustrious 35-year journey with the Aiken Department of Public Safety. With the sun finally breaking through the morning clouds, the atmosphere was perfect for a retirement celebration laden with heartfelt memories and hopes for the future.

Marking the Occasion

The event unfolded at the ADPS Busbee Headquarters Building, where colleagues, retirees, and local community members gathered to pay tribute to a man who has been a pillar of the Aiken community. Chief Charles Barranco led the proceedings, presenting Sawyer with his service pistol/revolver—a meaningful gesture reserved for long-serving retirees. This moment wasn’t just a formality; it was a testament to a career dedicated to serving and protecting the citizens of Aiken.

Reflections on a Career

While the room buzzed with laughter and chatter, Captain Sawyer found a moment to reflect on his storied career. “We accomplished a lot at Public Safety, and there were many highlights,” he shared. But it was the somber memories that stuck with him the most, particularly the devastating losses of Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson and Master Cpl. Sandy Rogers, both of whom died in the line of duty. Their tragic deaths, occurring within months of each other, left an indelible mark on Sawyer and the community.

“Those were devastating times,” he recalled, his voice tinged with emotion. Yet, as he looked back over the years, he also shared stories of triumph, particularly the successful investigation into a serious criminal case that resulted in a 20-year prison sentence for the perpetrator. “I had the privilege of supervising that investigation, and it felt great to bring some justice to the victim,” Sawyer beamed.

A Celebratory Luncheon

As the formalities of the ceremony concluded, the attendees were treated to a lovely luncheon filled with laughter and shared stories about Sawyer’s remarkable journey. Chief Barranco remarked on the gathering, saying, “We had folks here from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, and many people from Public Safety and other departments in the city. The impact Marty has had on his colleagues and the community is notable.”

Looking Ahead to a New Role

December 4 marked not just a retirement but also a new beginning for Captain Sawyer. Recently elected as Aiken County’s next sheriff, he expressed his eagerness to continue serving the community he loves. “I’m sad to leave, of course,” he said, “but I’m excited to step into this new role.” He is set to be sworn in on January 7, 2025, bringing his years of experience and dedication to a broader responsibility.

In the interim, Sawyer is busy preparing for his new position, planning personnel changes, budgets, and examining policies and procedures. He firmly believes in the importance of seamless cooperation between the Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Sheriff’s Office. “We’re all working for the same cause,” he noted, highlighting the ongoing partnership they will maintain.

Goodbye, But Not Farewell

As the event wrapped up, Captain Sawyer reflected on not just his career but the friendships forged over the years. “I’ll miss the camaraderie and teamwork, but it won’t be goodbye. I’ll still be around and working with many familiar faces,” he said with a smile.

As Aiken bids farewell to one of its dedicated officers, the atmosphere is filled with gratitude, admiration, and excitement for what lies ahead. Captain Marty Sawyer’s legacy of service will undoubtedly continue to shape the fabric of this wonderful community.
