Aiken Welcomes a Historical Exhibit Celebrating Racing’s Unsung Heroes
The beautiful city of Aiken is gearing up for an exciting event that promises to shine a light on the remarkable contributions of African Americans in the world of horse racing. Starting today, December 4, and running through January 17, the Heart of the Turf: Racing’s Black Pioneers exhibit will be showcased at the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. What’s in Store?
This traveling exhibit, developed by the esteemed Keeneland Library, offers a unique glimpse into the lives and careers of over 100 African American horsemen and women. Opening Day Lecture
To kick off the exhibit, there will be a free lecture today at 11 a.m., led by curator Roda Ferraro. The lecture will delve deeper into the themes of the exhibit, shedding light on the pivotal roles played by African Americans in horse racing, from racetrack superstars to the dedicated caretakers behind the scenes. Celebrating Legacy and Impact
The exhibit aims to highlight stories that have often been overlooked in the history of horse racing. From the days of slavery to the present, the contributions of African Americans in this field have laid the groundwork for what racing has become today. The Keeneland Library, which opened its doors in 1939, is known for its extensive collections and archives related to the thoroughbred industry. Holding the title of being the world’s largest repository for horse racing history, it features an impressive assortment of over 30,000 books and 5 million photographic negatives. The library was even awarded a Special Eclipse Award in 2002 for its contributions to the industry.

Since its launch in 2023, more than 85,000 people have engaged with the Heart of the Turf exhibit across Kentucky, making it a resounding success. The Keeneland Library is excited to extend this educational outreach initiative to other states, starting in late 2024. The exhibit will be open during regular museum hours, which are from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 2-5 p.m. on Sunday. Best of all, there’s no admission fee!
