Changes to Polling Places in Augusta Due to Hurricane Helene
Good morning, Augusta! On this lovely October 17, 2024, we’re excited to share some important information regarding your voting options as the early voting period is underway. With abundant sunshine gracing us today, and temperatures hitting a high of 67°F, it’s a perfect day to get out and make your voice heard. However, be sure to check where you need to go to vote because some polling places have changed due to damage from Hurricane Helene.
Hurricane Helene’s Impact and Polling Place Changes
As many of you may know, the Augusta Board of Elections gathered recently to discuss the adjustments made in light of the hurricane that affected our community. Sadly, some polling places have not yet been repaired and will need to accommodate these changes. If you’re in Precinct 201, you’ll want to pay special attention. Your polling location has officially moved from the Building Worship Center to the Boys and Girls Club located on Wheeless Road. This change is crucial for residents living in the Bayvale Road and Sibley Road neighborhoods, as well as those off North Leg.
Executive Director of the Richmond County Board of Elections, Travis Doss, shared some insights: “The voting room sustained damage due to the hurricane and so we’ve been looking for alternative polling locations.” So, if you’re one of those affected, make a note of your new spot!
Record Numbers for Early Voting
Early voting kicked off with a bang this year, with Georgia witnessing stunningly record-breaking numbers of participants. This is fantastic news for our democracy! According to Augusta resident Richard Jones, who attended a recent meeting to stay updated, knowing where to vote is just as key as actually voting. “With reference tonight, learn where you go to vote so that you can get there on time and also vote early. Get out and vote. Voting is your voice,” he emphasized.
During these times, communication is vital. Some residents have turning to their mailboxes to stay informed about any changes, especially when power outages made other information sources less reliable. “Travis Doss and the Board of Elections do a good job of notifying people, but people need to make sure they check their mail when they get something from the Board of Elections,” Jones added.
A Unique Election Year
This year’s presidential race stands out not only because of its significance but also due to the complications that arose from the storm; the Board of Elections hasn’t faced challenges like this since the pandemic in 2020. “It’s definitely been a challenge. The hurricane has made things… well, interesting. In a presidential year, we’re always busy, and there’s always a lot going on,” said Doss. “So now in 2024, we have Helene.”
