North Augusta Welcomes Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ: A Food Truck with a Heart
North Augusta is buzzing with excitement over the arrival of the new Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ, a tasty barbecue food truck that has quickly become a local favorite since its opening in July. If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, get ready to indulge your taste buds with some authentic Carolina-style barbecue right in your own backyard!
Meet the Man Behind the Grill
The mastermind behind this delectable venture is Mike Powell, the owner and founder of Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ. After spending 30 years in law enforcement, Mike decided it was time to pursue a different passion. “I always talked about starting a food trailer,” he shared, grinning as he reflected on the journey that led to this culinary adventure.
Family and Passion Fuel the Food Truck
Inspired by his family, Mike plunged into this new world of flavors, thanks to a gentle nudge from his eldest granddaughter. “She finally pushed me enough, so we said, ‘Alright, let’s do it,’” he recalled. It’s clear that family is at the heart of this operation; while Mike usually runs the truck solo, his family chips in during the busy dinner hours, making it a true family affair.
A Taste of the South
So, what’s on the menu? Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ serves up a delightful selection of pulled pork, shredded chicken sandwiches, and a variety of sides like mac and cheese, baked beans, and potato salad. One of the top sellers, according to Mike, is the homemade hash that complements the succulent meats perfectly. And let’s not forget the delicious vinegar-based sauce, which is a staple in Carolina cooking, giving the pulled pork that signature flavor that sets it apart from other barbecue styles.
The Journey to the Truck
Starting the food truck didn’t come without its challenges. Mike had to navigate through certifications and make modifications to get the truck ready for operation. But patience paid off. “It makes you feel good when you see people coming back for more and more,” he said with a twinkle in his eye.
Community Love
The connection with the community is evident, as regular customers like Kendall Blackmon keep coming back for their favorites. Kendall, who usually opts for the sausage dog and chip combo, is thrilled to see the food truck flourishing. “It’s really good barbecue,” he commented while waiting for his meal, illustrating the growing affection for this tasty treasure in town.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Mike has big dreams for Palmetto Smoke-House BBQ. He envisions expanding the business into a brick-and-mortar restaurant not far from where the food truck is parked while still keeping the truck operational. “I enjoyed it, and I like talking to people,” he added, emphasizing the joy he gets from being part of the North Augusta community. “We enjoy the community. We live close and serve the community we live in.”
