NORTH AUGUSTA, SC – Celebrating a New Chapter at the Nancy Carson Library
On August 30, 2024, the Nancy Carson Library in North Augusta held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of a significant renovation project that has transformed its interior layout and services. The library, which has been a beloved space for the community since the 1980s, is now equipped to better serve its visitors with modern amenities and facilities.
A New Look and New Features
The renovation project, which cost approximately $1.85 million, included extensive changes to the library’s interior. According to Gary Bunker, Chairman of the Aiken County Council, the goal of the renovations was to enhance the library experience for all members of the community. He emphasized how the improvements reflect the changing needs of library users and the community at large.
The upgrades feature a dedicated location for children and youth services, which aims to create a more inviting space for younger patrons. In addition, the library now boasts four new group study spaces, an ADA-compliant family restroom, and a kitchenette in the community meeting room. To promote a bright and welcoming atmosphere, LED ceiling lights have been installed throughout the facility, along with new carpeting, finishes, and furnishings.
Community Support and Funding
The ambitious renovation was made possible through a combination of funding sources. The largest chunk, about $1.3 million, came from Aiken County Government’s Capital Project Sales Tax IV program. The Friends of the Nancy Carson Library Foundation contributed an additional $400,000. Moreover, a $100,000 legislatively-directed infrastructure grant from the State of South Carolina and $65,000 from the ABBE Regional Library System helped round out the funding needed for the project.
The architectural design for the renovations was led by McMillian Pazdan Smith Architecture, a firm based in Greenville, South Carolina, while J.E. Stewart Builders Inc. of Aiken handled the construction work. Their collaborative effort has brought a fresh and functional new look to the library.
A Bright Future Ahead
As the Nancy Carson Library reopens its doors to the public, there is palpable excitement among staff and community members alike. Library officials are eager to welcome the citizens of Aiken County back to explore the newly renovated space, which has been tailored to foster learning, creativity, and community engagement.
The renovations serve as a reminder of the library’s mission to be a resource hub for information, technology, and community programs. With these enhancements, the Nancy Carson Library is poised to remain a vital part of the North Augusta community for many years to come.
The Nancy Carson Library is located at 135 Edgefield Road and encourages all community members to come and enjoy the new facilities. With the new renovations complete, the library is ready to embrace a future filled with opportunities for growth and connection.
