North Augusta Gears Up for Marching Band Season

In North Augusta, the start of the school year signifies more than just textbooks and classes; it marks the exciting return of marching band season. For the students of North Augusta High School, it’s time to step into their roles with the Jacket Regiment, one of the most spirited high school marching bands in the area.

Band Preparation Begins Early

Marching Band Director Chuck Deen emphasized that preparations begin as soon as the last marching season wraps up. “I start thinking about the next season right after the current one ends,” Deen shared. He lays out plans concerning the show concept, prop design, and music selection. Following a brief two-week break after school ends, students dove headfirst into practice with two mini-camps held on Tuesday evenings in July.

The students took a break during the July 4th holiday but reconvened for a full week of band camp starting July 8. Deen explained, “We had four days and then two mini-camps, and now here we are, back in school.” The structure of practice hours is largely influenced by weather conditions. Typically, practice extends from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. after school. However, if it’s extremely hot, students might wait indoors before heading outside.

Making Music in the Heat

Even though summer heat can make practice challenging, senior band member Gaby Cordez, who plays the piccolo, noted that the group manages to keep the mood light and fun. “We’re all about making the best of it, even when it gets tough out there,” Cordez remarked.

This Year’s Show Theme

This season’s show has a theme called The Edge of kNIGHT, inspired by the tale of Cinderella and her knight. Deen explained that students enjoy music that has classical elements combined with a darker tone. “This year’s show includes a mix of Russian and German operatic classical music,” he said, referring to the unique blend they are excited to present. “The kids like things that are a little bit classical and darker in sound,” he added.

Upcoming Events and Competition Season

The competition season will officially begin on September 14, when the Jacket Regiment hosts the Bands Across the Savannah clinic exhibition. Several local schools, including Midland Valley and Silver Bluff, are set to attend. Deen mentioned that this is a smaller event but looks forward to an evening full of lively competition featuring bands from Richmond County and Columbia County.

Looking ahead, Deen expressed his anticipation for showcasing the band’s creativity in the upcoming performances. “I’m really excited about showing off our show this year,” he said, indicating that the unique musical arrangement and theme will make a strong impression.

Excitement Fills the Air

The Jacket Regiment will not only compete but will also perform during North Augusta High School’s home football games on Friday nights, a tradition that brings together students, families, and community members. The excitement surrounding both football games and marching band performances is palpable, enriching the sense of school spirit.

As students dust off their instruments and perfect their routines, both the marching band and football teams prepare for a thrilling season ahead. In North Augusta, the rhythm of the marching band blends seamlessly with the energy of the football season, creating lasting memories for the entire community.
