Aiken Experiences Population and Business Boom
AIKEN, S.C. – The prominent city of Aiken, South Carolina, continues to experience a surge in population and business development, making it one of the most sought-after cities in the Palmetto State. With a marked growth rate of 0.82% yearly, its population has increased to 33,216 in 2024 — a 3.35% increment.
A Magnet for Migrants
Aiken’s appeal lies largely in its Southern charm and culture, attracting people from all around. According to recent census data, its population growth rate has surpassed 10% since 2010. “People want to come here because of the weather and the value and the culture,” shared local Realtor Jamie McLeod. This appeal has seen individuals like Lisa Vanbelt-Diller who was smitten by Aiken after moving from Washington, D.C. in 2018, turning it into her retirement haven. “I was like it’s in the middle of nowhere and I came here to shut my mother up then I fell in love with it,” says Vanbelt-Diller.
Growth in Commerce and Infrastructure
With the rising population, Aiken has also seen significant enhancements in trade and infrastructure. These changes are becoming more noticeable and are auspicious for Aiken’s continual growth – establishments are more eager to set up shop in the area, thereby creating more job opportunities. This can be seen through the various developments along Laurens Street and Whiskey Road.
Conversion of Aiken Mall
Among the exciting new ventures is the conversion of the Aiken Mall into a mixed-use development. Covering an area of 44 acres, the expansive project will not only feature retail stores but also a walking trail and park for the residents to enjoy. The new establishment will aptly be named Aiken Towne Park. The project has already welcomed a new Chicken Salad Chick outlet.
A Promising Future
The city of Aiken is on an upward trajectory, with an influx of both people and businesses. This new generation of Aikens has layered the city with an innovative spirit that sits comfortably alongside its historical charm. It delivers an enriching experience for its citizens and poses an alluring promise for potential migrants.
