Aiken SRMC Expands Opportunities for Students with Intellectual Disabilities Through Effective Partnership

Aiken Shines Bright with New Opportunities at SRMC

Aiken, SC – What’s better than a sunny day? A sunny day filled with exciting news and opportunities! It was a beautiful November 25th morning with sunshine and a few clouds hanging lightly overhead. As the temperature climbed to a pleasant 71°F, there was the perfect breeze blowing from the west-southwest at 10 to 15 mph—a delightful backdrop for what has been happening at the SRMC Aiken office.

Today is especially bright as the Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor for the Savannah River Site, welcomes yet another student worker from the University of South Carolina Aiken’s LIFE Program. This marks the second student they’ve hired this year, and the excitement is palpable!

Creating Paths for Students

The LIFE Program is truly a gem in our community, designed specifically for students with intellectual disabilities. The program offers individualized support focusing on academic and social inclusion, giving students the chance to gain employment skills and enjoy a fuller college experience. With this two-year program, students are not just gaining a credential but are truly winning at life!

This time, the lucky student scooping up the opportunity is Brayden Thompson, a second-year participant in the LIFE Program. Brayden’s responsibilities will include working part-time in facility management within the SRMC Aiken office. His tasks will range from helping set up for events to collaborating closely with facility administrator Claire Con.

SRMC Makes a Difference

The partnership between SRMC and USCA LIFE has proven to be beneficial for all parties involved. Kathy Vaselopulos, Director of Prime Contract Management at SRMC, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration. “We are thrilled to work with the university again and support this vital program that prioritizes students with intellectual disabilities,” she said with a smile. “Giving students real-world work experience is crucial as it helps them develop skills and expand their networks for meaningful future careers.”

That’s right! The excitement is not only in what the students are gaining, but it’s also in how they’re giving back to the community. This partnership allows local businesses to embrace diversity and develop future employees who offer fresh perspectives and unique skill sets.

LIFE Program Director Weighs In

With such a powerful program in action, Dr. Melissa Martin, the USCA LIFE Program Director, highlighted the comprehensive approach the program provides. “Our LIFE students are USCA students first and foremost,” she stated. “We offer them access to social events, clubs, Greek life, and other resources that all students at USCA enjoy.”

And let’s not forget about the vital preparation the LIFE staff offers. They play a key role in helping students with job applications and ensuring they feel ready to step into a world filled with possibilities.

Community Collaboration

For over a year, SRMC has made a significant impact through its various collaborations. This is not just about the job; it’s about fostering a community where everyone feels valued and included. Back in September, SRMC generously donated $20,000 to the LIFE Program, and with the addition of Brayden to their team, they are showing that they are committed to driving change and making a real difference.

As we move further into the fall season, let’s keep our fingers crossed for continued sunshine—particularly the kind that supports bright futures like those at the SRMC Aiken office!

With a slight chance of rain and a low of 54°F later tonight, let’s cherish this moment and rally behind our local students, because tomorrow’s leaders are being shaped right here in Aiken. Keep up the great work, everyone!
