Macon’s Own Jewelry Whiz: How Betsy Pittard Turned Side Hustle into Success
When you think of Macon, Georgia, you might picture peach trees and southern charm. But did you know it’s also home to a rising star in the world of jewelry design? Meet Betsy Pittard, a creative force who took a little side job and turned it into a thriving business that has customers buzzing across the Southeast.
The Humble Beginnings
Years ago, as a 16-year-old, Betsy took on a small gig after school, working at a DIY jewelry bead shop. At the time, she wasn’t thinking about becoming a designer; she just wanted to earn some pocket money. “I either had to learn how to bead or find another job,” she remembers. Well, she chose the beading route, and boy, are we glad she did! After high school, the ambitious young woman made the leap to Athens, enrolling at the University of Georgia (UGA).
From Dorm Room to Design House
It was at UGA where things really began to take off for Betsy. “I got my business license just so I could go to the Atlanta Apparel Mart, not thinking I was going to do anything serious with it.” Just imagine a college student whipping up beautiful pieces in her dorm room! But that creative spark didn’t go unnoticed. Her sister encouraged her to check out a new shoe store in their hometown to see if they’d carry her jewelry. With a picture frame of samples in her hands, Betsy boldly walked in and asked, “Hey, do you want to buy my jewelry?” It was a moment of courage that led to an impressive sale; the store owner snapped up everything except one bracelet! That’s how it all began—a simple, yet brave inquiry that set the stage for a very bright future.
Jewelry with a Personal Touch
Fast forward 15 years, and Betsy has become a renowned designer in the jewelry world. Now based in the Augusta area, her creations are available in over 50 shops, mainly around the Southeast. “I’ve recently hooked up with Faire, the wholesale website, and I’ve been getting a lot of stores through them, which is wonderful,” she says, grinning.
What makes Betsy’s jewelry so special? She crafts pieces that almost anyone can wear. “I don’t study trends. I make what I like,” she says, emphasizing her individuality. While she acknowledges the current Pantone colors, she opts for timeless neutrals over fleeting fads. “Customers are more likely to buy cream necklaces over bright pink ones,” she explains.
Exciting New Collections
This fall, Betsy is giddy about launching her UGA pieces, perfect for the dedicated Bulldogs fans out there. “We’re having charm necklaces that say UGA, featuring bulldogs, football helmets, and all things gridiron,” she shares with a twinkle in her eye. It’s the must-have accessory for football season!
Among her favorite designs is the coveted coin necklace, along with her stunning pieces named The Beethoven ($48), The Edgar ($38), and the showstopping Danbury at just $78. “I switch between those often,” she reveals. What a delightful treasure trove!
