Making Strides Against Domestic Violence: Aimee Hall and Safe Homes of Augusta
Welcome to Augusta, where community spirit shines brightly, even through the drizzles of early November. We’re in the season where the rains fall gently, with a high of 78°F, creating a cozy atmosphere perfect for reflection and action. Speaking of action, did you know that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month? It’s a significant time where we pause to remember victims, raise awareness about the dire situation of domestic violence, and celebrate the inspiring stories of survival. One incredible woman working tirelessly to support this mission is Aimee Hall, the executive director of Safe Homes of Augusta.
A Journey of Heart and Service
Aimee’s journey into this vital role is anything but ordinary. Back in 2005, she stepped into an area she never anticipated would become her life’s passion. “I can’t imagine doing anything different. I love what I do and I love the people in our community,” Aimee said, radiating warmth and determination. Imagine going through a tough time, praying for guidance, and then finding yourself leading an organization dedicated to helping those in need. That was Aimee’s story — a call to serve women and children during their times of crisis.
Interestingly, Aimee started with a background in finance. Encouraged by a friend, she found her way to Safe Homes, where she initially took on the role of finance director. “I had never heard of Safe Homes, and I had never worked for a nonprofit at that time. So, I applied and served for about a year and a half before becoming the executive director,” she shared, highlighting the impactful twist of fate that led her here.
Building a Brighter Future
Now, nearly two decades later, Aimee has played an integral role in the growth and outreach of Safe Homes. “I was able to take part in raising nearly $3 million to build this facility,” she proudly exclaimed. But Safe Homes is more than just a roof over heads; it’s a lifeline. They offer services to a staggering 10 counties in Georgia, including Burke, Columbia, and Richmond. From a 24-hour crisis hotline to emergency shelter, support groups, and life skills classes, Safe Homes is a pillar of hope for many.
Aimee’s revelations about her own past brought a deeper understanding of the struggles faced by those they assist. “When I came here, I realized I had experienced teen dating violence. It really opened my eyes to what a lot of people in our community may face,” Aimee reflected. It’s a sentiment that underscores the importance of sharing and listening to stories, fostering empathy and support.
More Than Just a Shelter
Safe Homes doesn’t just provide a safe space; it’s all about offering comprehensive support. “We do legal advocacy, which is a huge program where we help clients with temporary protection orders, filling out paperwork and filing,” Aimee explained. With the addition of two licensed professional counselors, they’re tackling the mental health aspect head-on because, let’s face it, overcoming trauma is a journey that often requires professional support.
The children of these families deserve special attention too. Aimee emphasized the importance of youth programs that not only help with school enrollment and health records but also offer enriching experiences like field trips. “That one is really near and dear to my heart because I have children of my own,” Aimee shared, showcasing her commitment to nurturing the next generation.
A Focus on Staff Well-being
In this challenging work, it’s crucial to care for the caregivers. Aimee is not only dedicated to her community but also to her staff. “Secondary trauma is real,” she acknowledged. Ensuring that her team is well-supported allows them to be at their best while serving others. “I want them to be okay,” she said, reflecting her empathetic leadership style.
