Augusta Canal Continues to be Off-Limits Following Hurricane Helene

The affected area includes the towpath that stretches from the Raw Water Pumping Station to the Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Augusta Utilities explained that fallen trees, erosion, and various hazards along this segment have made it unsafe for public access. So, for now, our favorite walking and biking path along the canal is off-limits.
But Don’t Worry, There’s Still Access!
While it’s a bummer that the towpath is closed, there’s still good news! Folks can continue to enjoy the canal from Lake Olmstead Park to the Pumping Station, and also from Lake Olmstead to downtown. This means you can still get outside and enjoy some fresh air, go for a jog, or take a calming walk along the scenic views of the canal, even if parts of it are currently restricted.
