Sunshine and Civic Duty: Aiken County Residents Prepare for Early Voting
Good morning, Aiken! It’s a beautiful day here as we enjoy abundant sunshine and a near record high temperature of 86°F. Perfect weather for heading out to the polls, wouldn’t you agree? With the gentle winds from the west at 5 to 10 mph and just a few passing clouds, it feels like a great day to engage with our community and think about what we can do to make Aiken even better.
Time to Make Your Voice Heard
As early voting is now underway, I want to take a moment to remind everyone about an important item on our ballots: the renewal of the Capital Project Sales Tax (CPST). This tax has been part of our community for nearly 25 years, and it’s crucial for the continued growth and improvement of Aiken County. What’s great about this tax is that it brings benefits to all of us, no matter your political views. This should be a non-partisan issue since it’s all about enhancing our community.
Why Vote Yes for CPST?
Since the introduction of the CPST, it has funded numerous vital projects. These include school funding, infrastructure upgrades, and improvements to our parks and recreation facilities. We also owe support to local treasures like Hopeland Gardens, Rye Patch, and the County Museum. These locations enrich our community and provide recreational spaces for families, students, and visitors alike.
One of the best parts about the CPST is that it’s a fair tax. By keeping our property taxes low and avoiding increased public debt, we’re making sure that our community can thrive without overburdening our wallets. The CPST operates on a pay-as-you-go model, meaning the sales tax revenues are available before we start funding these important projects. It’s smart budgeting for our community!
Economic Relief for Residents
Another important point to consider is how the CPST impacts our local economy. It’s a tax that’s levied on all purchases made by residents and visitors alike, which means that we, as residents, end up paying less than 1%. With approximately half of retail sales exempt from this tax, we ensure that low-income families and especially our senior citizens on fixed incomes aren’t unduly burdened. This is critical in today’s inflationary economy.
First-Hand Experience
Speaking as a member of one of the county boards, I’ve witnessed how this tax translates into real improvements. The equipment purchases, essential infrastructure projects, and enhancements to our quality of life are all supported through the revenues generated by the CPST. Not only does it benefit Aiken, but it also extends support to projects in our neighboring city of North Augusta.
